Pompey pull off coup with Defoe deal

Premier League Portsmouth

Jermain Defoe's long farewell from Spurs finally ended with a move to Portsmouth - and what a coup for Harry Redknapp.

Defoe has been a guarantee of goals throughout his career at West Ham and Spurs. He is as natural a goalscorer as England possesses.

But a lack of action at Spurs, plus an understandable refusal to sign a new contract when spending most of his time on the sidelines, has forced him into the grateful arms of Redknapp at Fratton Park.

Defoe's arrival, along with Lassana Diarra, is a real statement of intent by Portsmouth - two quality signings and more proof of Redknapp's ability to attract top players.

The striker would be at home in any of the sides at the top of the table - so have some managers missed a trick in allowing themselves to be outflanked by Redknapp in the hunt for Defoe?

Should Everton have offered Andrew Johnson, not at his best this season and not a regular, to Spurs in exchange for Defoe?

Should Manchester City have tried to sign Defoe rather than make a move for Benjani, a striker Redknapp was willing to sacrifice to land his top target?

In both cases, my answer is a resounding "yes". Defoe would improve Everton and Manchester City immeasurably but the chance has gone.

Portsmouth was probably not on Defoe's radar when he watched from the sidelines at Spurs and pondered his next move. But circumstances have conspired to allow Redknapp to do a deal.

Spurs were not keen to keep Defoe as he stalled over a new deal. They did not want a repeat of Sol Campbell's departure, when a player worth millions walked away for nothing.

And Defoe's hand has been forced by a lack of action that has left him an increasingly isolated figure at White Hart Lane, with Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov the first choices of new boss Juande Ramos.

Was it a coincidence that Defoe finally made his move on the day he failed to make Fabio Capello's first England squad, even an extended party of 30?

Defoe admitted that he could not expect an England place when he was not playing football regularly - an argument David Beckham must also accept.

If he plays regularly he will get goals and is such a natural talent he will surely make an irresistible case for an England recall.

It will also make other clubs wonder whether they have been slow off the mark in allowing Portsmouth to clinch a deal for an increasingly rare commodity, a young natural goalscorer.

Portsmouth will be winners with this deal - and Capello will also be the beneficiary if Defoe reproduces what he is capable of.

Diarra (although not what this thread is about), was in the Chelsea squad for the Charity Shield. This officially isn't a competitive game and therefore excludes him from any suspension.

I still reckon Harry's done well, Diarra hasn't had a lot of game time but he is still top class.

As for defoe, he's made an impact every time he's come on this season, i reckon he and benjani will be absolutely potent.

If a player is sent off in the Community Shield then there is an automatic suspension for the league. It seems that in some respects the Community is an official match and in others it is a friendly. He should be banned, but won't.

Ha ha ha ha! McNulty you're hilarious. That was one of the most pathetic articles I've ever read on hear. My mate who's a Spurs fan is so delighted that Defoe is gone, he's paying for my beer all night tonight.

He (Defoe, not my mate) would not improve Everton's team, because we currently have 4 better strikers than him, all of whom bring more to the team than just being a "natural goalscorer". Is Defoe a more natural goalscorer than the Yak? No, of course he isn't, so how on Earth would Defoe improve the team "immeasurably"? Trash, McNulty.

I agree Phil it's a great signing for Pompey,a quality striker who maybe gives them slightly different sort of movement up front. I think with regular football in the starting 11 he will improve greatly and cut out the inconsistency that he is sometimes prone to. Got to disagree about Lassana Diarra, 'quality' is just not a word that goes with such a name. He's shown nothing at any of his clubs to show he is anything better than average.

Diarra is a very good player,a young Makalele in the making,I saw him play for France against the Faroe Islands,he was just superb.I just hope Defoe proves his critics wrong,he might flourish especially if put with Kanu upfront who is a good provider of quality passes

Lassana is a good player with good vision,I can only imagine how good Pompey would be if Kanu,Diarra and Defoe were both on at the same time, two good passers of the ball and a good finisher, that will be bad news to most teams

Wow.. so its finally confirmed by this article that your aim is to be purely controversial on this site. Johnson for Defoe... "A resounding yes"... from who?? only you Mr Mc, the expert in all things footy, so it sounds. Yer, yer, of course its all about opinions, but... givusabreak mate!!!
Sounds like you were searching for examples there. Everton dont need Defoe,he's never consistently proved himself. Johnson is doing fine thank you very much, and wouldn't swap him for many other forwards in the Prem.....
It's also nice to see (being sarcastic here), how BBC even update Johnson on a GOAL, on its website, only to say its been disallowed for whatever moments later!!!... how about waiting to see if its a goal or not?? Simple??
Anyway, to be honest, this is the first time I've ever felt to complain about your service, and althogh my complaint is serious, I must say, your servce is usually superb overall. However, people like McNulty and their arroagance only serve to alienate real people from the BBC. There is no need for his deliberate wind-ups? Is that what the BBC has come to to ??... if so, well, its bye-bye, and hello SKY, or whatever...
You a;ways prided yourself on upholding the qualities of quality journalism, however McNulty's flippancy and BBC's poor live Premiership goal service (saying GOAL: Blackburn 0 Everton 1) when it was atually not, strikes me as amateurism and unprofessionalism. Please keep up your previous excellent standards!!

Gotta agree with the other comments on here, Defoes a great player but would probably be on the bench for Everton like Johnson as neither are as good as Yakubu, would Defoe have been willing to trade the bench at White Hart lane for the same seating arrangements at Goddison? I think not. As for City, well I think most would agree that Defoe is not the sort of striker they are looking for at the moment. It looks like they need an old school Centre Forward with strength as well as pace and in players like Podolski and Benjani they could have got that. Maybe Newcastle could have done with Defoe however as Owen just doesn't seem to be firing them in anymore and Defoe has always looked to me to be the Englishman to eventually take his place in the line up if Capello were looking for a similar player.
