Bobby Charlton should have had more caps too - perhaps he could play against Switzerland - its only a friendly after all. While we are at it what about Gary Lineker he was only one goal short of Sir Bobbys England goal scoring records of 49 - perhaps he could play too to try to get the one goal he needs to equal the record.
---------------------------

Quality! Why turn an England international into a circus for one player to gain a cap so he can further boost "brand Beckham"...i would never deny hes always given 100% effort but hes been on a steady decline since the world cup in 2002,as iv said before, which is why Sir Alex decided to sell him.

He had a half decent game in a FRIENDLY against Brazil, but still lokked very slow and continued to drift inside and clog up the middle of the pitch and play his hollywood passes. If that was a competative match does any seriously think brazil would of given him THAT much time on the ball??

Hes been an ok ambassedor for football (does everyone forget he admitted getting a booking on purpose against Wales was it??, plus he got exposed as a "love rat",not really role model behavoir, and those happened in his "mature" years.) But fair play, hes doing a lot of charity work now.

Hes done an ok job at international level, but has NEVER performed in a major tournament

World cup 98- wasnt bad...sent off

Euro 00- again,not bad..

World cup 02- should of admitted he was injured, didnt do anything except shirk a challenge which led to brazils equaliser...oh im sorry,he whiped in a corner for Cambell to score then hogged the limelight by celebrating like he had scored!!

Euro 04- Poor, had lost any sort of pace by now

World Cup 06- Slowed England down, and like usual drifted inside too much.

Oh im sorry, did i forget one QUALIFIER against GREECE (yes they won euro 04,but where still a bad team at that stage) at home, where yes,he scored a quality free kick but spent the whole game running around like a headless chicken instead of trying to calm his troops down and get the ball down and play, instead of him punting the ball up to Heskey at every chance.

Capello, well done for not bowing down to the media and buying into the Tabloid hype.
Even if its only a 10-20 minute run out, the like of SWP, Bentley and Young deserve that chance to impress from the start or from the bench. Its that simple.
Can anyway remotely serious about good football and progression seriously argue??

In one word - CIRCUS.

I'm really sorry that England can be the only place in the football world where such a circus can happen. Pay the price for celebrity obession.

True. Some people forget becks was dropped due to poor form in the first half of the season. Real won two of the first nine games he played in.

When it became apparent that Real were stalling on his contract he decided to look around and that was fair enough.

It was only after the Galaxy deal that he was left out again only to return half way through Real's eighteen match unbeaten league run in the second half of the season that took them to the title.

yep yep very biased and one sided article.whats this anti beckanism?..haha!,yeh becks did'nt make the squad but i have 2 agree with capello, not only since becks is not match fit,i think he would have done well in the friendly but he needs that push to perform at the level he is caple of,the same way England needs thats push to play something near their full potential.

unless your scotish, irish, french or a biggot you will be a firm supporter of anti-beckanism 2 the squad.
face facts, who gave england a lifeline in the match against croatia.yes BECKHAM.

you must have a short memory, england crashed out in 06 because of rooneys idiocy.
by the way i dont see LAMPARD int he squad, haha!

i feel sory that guy, great footballer but he always messes up in the England internationals.

cant wait for the friendly
cheers!

Hardy-har-har.

England got back into the game when they started playing route one, long ball football, in case you hadnt actually seen the game. Beckham did very little but the scientists put 2 and 2 together and assume that goals for the team while Becks is one the pitch are all down to King David.

It just goes to show how a large section of people/shoppers who call themselves football fans are nothing more than lemmings, waiting for the next media article so they can acquire a new opinion. England haven't even played one game under Capello but already the circus is in full flow. Lemmings. laugh

Regardless of your opinion on Backham, good or bad, if he is not 100% fit and not playing regularly then why play him?!

Given that this is only a friendly, and there is doubt over Beckhams fitness, it seems a good opportunity to give other players who are performing well the chance to shine.

Becks is a known quantity to Capello, and he will pick him on merit and fitness if he decides he will be of value to the squad. Give Capello a chance before unloading our typically british judge, jury and executioner routine on him

MrPassandMove - I get a slight feeling that you don't like Beckham lol. I must say, I can't in all sensibleness agree with your comment that he 'ran around like a headless chicken instead of calming his players down. If I remember correctly, he was the only one who could be bothered to play that day. I'm not a 'Beckham till we die' fan, but I think you need to give the guy a little more credit than that. I haven't seen a player wear the shirt with more pride in a long time, or give 100% to the limit of his ability. No-one should be a permanent fixture in a squad, but even playing MLS in a different continent he can still come back and give England an extra dimension under a clueless manager that they dont have when he's not playing. I do feel that he is part of an old system of play that has lost it's vision is in serious need of updating. There are no ideas and so we rely on what we know. I hope that Capello can organise the squad, play the right players in their proper club positions, nurture the talent, reward it and make us look like a football team again. But you have to give more credit to the likes of Beckham for the graft that they have put in. Lest we forget, the fans and the media made him into a 'god' figure, so it's the typical English thing to do, build up the icon then yank the rug out from under them when they are rich or famous or great and then curse their demise like they were never that great anyway. We hate anyone too successful, but there is a generation of young talent coming through in the next decade who put their football boots or trainers on and went out to the park or the street because they saw Beckham play. The man deserves a little credit.

And while we are crucifying Beckham for not single handedly saving the world of English football, spare a thought for one or two other so called world class players who are positively abismal playing for their country. Gerrard who cant hit the stand behind the goal let alone the goal in international football, Lampard (enough said), SWP who can run and run if only he took the ball with him and so on and so on. There is more than one player that should be left out of Capello's squad if we are talking about under performing.

Actually Beckham has often given a very good impression of a headless chicken. If you want an example look at his sending off against Austria.

For someone who rarely puts in a tackle unless it's from the 'blind side' his diciplinary record, especially in his years at Madrid was diabolical. Four red cards and double figure yellows in his final season there.

You can accept player being booked for aggression but cynical challenges and petulance (including calling a linesman a son of a whore... in Spanish!) are unnacceptable.

But then Becks fans are used to glossing things over.

We need to plan for the future so Beckham had to go. He'll get his 100th appearence some other time when the game is'nt important.

I'd give him his 100th cap on the proviso he ,plus the rest of the brand beckham circus, immediately fly off to La La land, very appropriate for that weird bunch, never to be seen or heard from again. If he could also take his new best friend with him,Gordon McBroon I'll be eternally grateful!!Beckham praising McBroon means his peerage will soon be in the post.Capello has done the right thing by not picking him,we don't need anymore of that crap.laughlaughbiggrinbiggrin

Capello picked guys on League Form...Beckham had no form cos he hadnt played..So he was omitted from the squad..

Im not sure why this thread was started...Capello stated he wanted to watch as many of his guys as possible and obviously he can not watch Beckham he can only talk about his fitness..which regardless of "Friendly" he isnt match fitness...

I was however glad to see Alan Smith as he is dog pooh
