Who can make the semis?

African Nations Cup
comment on the article

Right, so we now know who will contest the quarter-finals of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

On Sunday, Ghana meet Nigeria in Accra for a super quarter-final, if you can call it that, while later in the evening the impressive Ivory Coast will fancy their chances against Guinea.

Then on Monday holders Egypt will take on Angola in Kumasi and Tunisia come up against the might of Samuel Eto'o and his Cameroon team-mates in Tamale.

Some mouth-watering ties in prospect, not least the first between the hosts Ghana and Berti Vogts's men, who scraped into the knockout stages.

Michael Essien came alive for the Black Stars against Morocco and the Super Eagles will have to find another level if they are to stay in the contest. Can they raise it or will the home crowd be singing and dancing for another few days at least?

Ivory Coast have looked formidable in the group stages, winning all their games, and they will look to Didier Drigba and Yaya Toure to drive them into the semis against Guinea. The last eight's most straightforward tie?

Perhaps not so clear cut is Egypt's match against Angola.

The holders have looked solid but they will take on an in-form Palancas Negras with star striker Manucho looking like an excellent piece of business by Manchester United. But having qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time, a win over the Pharaohs would still be a shock.

Last of all, do Tunisia have the defence to keep out Eto'o? Their only win so far has been against a young South African side but in Francileudo Dos Santos do they have someone who could yet prove his worth at the business end of the tournament?

Who do you think can make it through to the semi-finals on Thursday?

The Gam berween The host nation, Ghana and Nigeria will be very tough. However, what ia m thinking, Ghana will win as they prepared themselves to take the nation Cup like what was done by Tunisia in 2004 and Egypt in 2006.

If you look at the history of the past competitions, Nigeria has always beaten that eliminated them in the preceding competition on the way to the semi-finals. So I see a Nigeria - Ivory Coast final. And Nigeria beats Ivory Coast.

Ghana - Nigeria has always been a cagey, competitive and many times, nick on the line. Nigeria has taken a lot of whipping from their eternal enemy, Ghana. I remember, back in those days in the 70's Ghana used to trash the Eagles. One results stands out, 7 - 0 in Accra.

However, in recent years, Nigeria has find a way to slip past the Stars. The Last two times Nigeria played Ghana in the CUP Of NATIONS, they edge past the Stars by lone ago. Those victories came in Mali 2002 and Egypt 2006.

I must say that the encounter between these two rivals has nothing to do with form. Take Senegal '92. Nigeria was the team on form. But They lost to Ghana during the qualifying rounds and the semi-final in the tournament itself.

I must say that on this ocassion, the winner will be the one that can rise above the pressure. There is equal level of pressure on both teams from their respect fans. Ghanaians were not impress with the early results the Stars produce in the games against Guinea and Namibia. So did Eagles fare below their standard in the games against The Elephants and Mali. However, both teams won 2-0 in their final group games. The jury is out on who impressed. I will not count on that very much though, But I think the body language of the Super Eagle says it all. They are running low on leadership, enthusiasm and real motivation. If they can find a way round these factors, they will be fly over the Stars. Otherwise, they will be Super Chicken once again as they did to Ghana in London last year. Ghana do not always repeat their success. They always seems to run out of fuel after difficult but impressive victories. But playing at home in from 20 millions coaches, the game is theirs to loss.

My last dime goes to Ghana.
Ghana 2 - 1 Nigeria.

In other games
Ivory Coast 3 - 1 Guinea
Tunisia 0 - Cameroon 2
Egypt 1 - Angola 2

The great BBC, I commend your good work. Indeed you have shown that you are excellently worldwide. May the good Lord give you strength and favour in performance of your duty. Keep it up.

Super Eagles team is a team full of surprises. In several tournaments where they started very bad, that is when you see them performed well. The problem with Nigerians is that they think that they will win every tournament even when other teams like Elephant of Ivory C. and Eagles of Mali are superlatively good. I have not ruled Eagles as bad team in this tournament because they lost zero 1 to great Ivory C, play draw with Good Mali and won Benin two Zero. It is indeed a good record. So critics should shut up!
For quarter finals I thick these teams as the owner
Super Eagles wins Ghana, Ivory C. wins Guinea, Cameroon takes it from Tunisia while Egypt grabs from Angola. For finals, Super Eagles and Ivory Coast.
Watch out!

I think Tunisia is a great team, but I am not so sure they will beat Cameroon. Let's look at the records:

Tunisia (almost lost to Senegal before a 2-2 draw; Beat the Weak South Africa 3-1 and then draw with Angola 0-0. Five goals scored.

Cameroon: lost to Egypt 4-2 (slept in first half but woke up 2nd half).
Beat Zambia (a very good team that Egypt struggled with) 5-1; beat Sudan 3-0. Cameroon has scored 10 goals and allowed only two goals allowed since 2nd half of Egypt game). So on what basis are some people here picking Tunisia to beat Cameroon?

Ivory Coast-Guinea - no contest. I can't even believe people are picking penalties let alone go Guinea to win. Quit drinking too much palm wine.

Egypt-Angola: Sorry I see no contest. The Angolans will fall to Egypt. Egypt is a class team with lots of experience and attacking flair. They are the defending champions for christ's sakes. I think they will easily subdue Angola.

Ghana-Nigeria: Hmmmmm....I am not sure on this one. I see penalty kicks. Never ever underestimate Nigeria. I think they have awoken from their slumber and will soar. I think Ghana has reached its peak and it will not be good enough for the SuperEagles.

So, I think it will be Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Egypt.

In the semis: I think Egypt and Ivory Coast go to penalties and Ivory Coast loses because Egypt has a much better goalkeeper. Cameroon-Nigeria: not sure frankly. As a Cameroonian I pick Cameroon for obvious reasons by the Super Eagles are always a dangerous team. If I was a neutral, I would fancy Nigeria slightly only because their attack is more potent than my beloved Lions. But I hope I am wrong!

thanks for this opportunity.i must say that the match on Sunday will be a difficult one for the black stars but i am convinced that at the end of the day, the black stars will do what matters most and that is to win against Nigeria.they can go back to their country as they did in 1992 but it will not work.

think ghana are looking a bit stronger than Nigeria, and i anticipate an edgy game with ghana scraping it 1-0.

ivory coast-guinea is near certain victory for ivory coast im predicting 3-0

cameroon-tunisia is a tough one, and i reckon a close match with 1-1 going down to penalties

egypyt-angola is one i expect egypt to win, although it will be closer than expected. it would b fantastic for angola if they won this match though, and im kinda hoping the underdogs will win.
realistically 2-1 to tunisia

in the semis: ghana-tunisia close contest but ghana to win 1-0 as they have that little bit extra although tunisia have a good defense, ghana are strong enough

egypt-ivory coast will be a very entertaining game(if they both get to the semis) , as both sides are great on the attack. 2-2 would be realistic, although i wouldnt be surprised if either side won it

history should really not serve as a precedent in considering which teams are going forward in this nations cup. egypt, IC and cameroon all seem like they're on fire. between nigeria and ghana though .... it really is a toss and it could go either way.

It is obvious that Nigeria and Cameroon are not in the best of their forms at the moment. However, I believe in these teams as they will be fighting with their backs on the wall. Ivory Coast, Egypt and Cameroon will beat their oponents Guinea, Angola and Tunisia with ease to qualify for the semifinals. In so far as I respect Angola, Tunisia and Guinea, I doubt their abilities to resist their oponents.

Ghana vs Nigeria will be the match of the tournament as both sides will be playing under pressure. For Ghana, the pressure will be from the fans who have already started threatening their player's families (too bad). If the black stars entertain the slightest inferiority complex against the Eagles, they will lose the game. Nigeria on the other hand will be trying to impress their fans and also to show that they have found their form (which I don't think they have). It will be a difficult match but if Nigeria can resist the pressure from Ghanaian suporters (Cameroon is good at that - Nigeria and Mali can testify), they might carry the day. A win for Ghana will be a surprise for me. So I stand for Nigeria.

Ivory Coast and Egypt have impressed me so far and I think that if these teams meet at the CAN 2008 final, soccer fans will have a run for their money. However, they have the semifinals obstacle. Ivory Coast might not be that lucky to win Cameroon at the semifinals for obvious reasons!. While Egypt might be capable of winning the Eagles at this stage. I have a conviction that if Cameroon qualifies for the finals, they are picking up the trophy irrespective of their oponent. I preview an Egypt vs Cameroon finals!!.
