Desert duel hots up

European Tour
comment on the article

So Tiger Woods is up to his old tricks, then.

He fired a first-round 65 to take the early lead in Dubai but I'm sure he kept glancing nervously at the leaderboard to see where Ian Poulter was. Not.

Woods sets early pace in Dubai

Woods was out early doors, playing with Monty who carded a level-par 72, while young master Poulter (as Peter Alliss would call him) opened his much-anticipated campaign with a bogey.

It will be fascinating to see how this one unfolds, both in terms of whether a European Tour player can get the better of Woods in Dubai, and the fall-out from Poulter's outlandish claims.

I'm Tiger's main threat - Poulter

Let us know your thoughts.

Aye back to the real discussion. Woods is just making a mockary of golf. The US Open is going to be hilarious when the USGA are done amending the course to make it challenging for Tiger. Anyone who cant drive over 330 yards can forget it. Nae luck Freddie Couples!

Did anyone see Woods's drive on 17 today? He had to take a little off it to keep it down at 359 yards. Dear god...

PhillED - So your saying that Woods would not be where he is if he was playing against the Nichlaus's of the world??? Are you actually suggesting he only wins as much as he does cause there is no other top quality players??

Please tell me your joking.

well once again it's tiger 1st poulter nowhere still i bet he was well dressed as he hacked his way round to another poor finish. only challenger to tiger don't make me laugh, poulter would be lucky if woods let him carry his clubs because that is the only way he will ever be in the final group in a major.

The talk that Tiger doesn't have the competition around has no substance. It's hard to compare generations but fun trying. Tiger has created this whole debate because he wins so many competitions so people tend to ask why and that leads to a lot of conclusions that the competition is poor. Despite that there are quite a few other multiple major winners so I don't think you can say the competition is not all that.

He's the best ever and maybe it will take a few years for people to accept that, maybe only when Tiger has retired will people realise how much of a genuis he was.

OK I know it is late to comment on this article, but are there still people who don't realise that Tiger Woods is by far the greatest golfer the world has seen? Look at Els, Mickleson, Singh, then you have the likes of Rose, Garcia, Scott who are about to break through in the the major circle. The overall standard is much higher than in the 60's and 70's. People have to stop comparing other players with Woods and his acheivements. He is very much one of a kind.

monty391 - couldnt agree more. Give Jack Nichlaus the technology of today, he will still have absolutely nothing on Woods.

I have a collection of DVDs about Tiger (sad I know) but he is so much more than just a good ball striker. Thats what people who dont know much about golf mistaken him for. He's the complete athlete and its all due to his upbringing.

I predict 25 majors before he retires at least. I'd put money on it.

Same here, I will look for odds on 25 majors plus. I've studied golf biomechanics and sport psychology and Tiger is often used as an example of the ultimate professional. His mental strength is far superior let alone his technique and obvious skill. Class.
