FA Cup showdown: Arsenal & Man Utd

comment on the article

There's no doubt which match is the pick of the FA Cup fifth-round; as soon as Manchester United were drawn with Arsenal talk of another classic encounter got the BBC Sport HQ buzzing.

The rivalry between the two clubs remains as intense as ever, with United leading Arsenal at the top of the Premier League on goal difference alone.

The chance to push the other out of the FA Cup will be too hard to resist.

And as for the fans (and neutrals too), well they might just be hoping for another rollercoaster Cup tie.

Arsenal and Manchester United have met in the FA Cup final twice, in 1979 and again in 2005, and both times the Gunners have lifted the trophy.

The 1979 game is regarded as one of the finest FA Cup finals of all time.

Liam Brady was in sensational form for Arsenal, setting up goals for Brian Talbot and Frank Stapleton to give the Gunners a 2-0 lead.

Then, with five minutes left on the clock, Gordon McQueen netted for United before Sammy McIlroy ended a brilliant solo run to make it 2-2.

Ultimately, Brady had the last word, feeding the ball to Alan Sunderland at the far post, who slid in the winner in the dying seconds of the match.

Drama? Some say it was the most remarkable finish ever seen in the FA Cup.

There were far fewer goals when the two teams met again in the final 26 years later.

None in fact, as the match was played out goalless right up to extra-time, and for the first time the Cup would be settled on penalties.

United had dominated the final but Jens Lehmann kept Arsenal in it with some fine work between the posts.

The German settled the penalty shoot-out too, making the crucial save from Paul Scholes.

United won a 2004 semi-final while Arsenal triumped in the fifth round in 2003 - but what about 1999?

The semi-final replay at Villa Park was another belter.

United were in the ascendancy and David Beckham put them ahead with a fizzing strike.

Dennis Bergkamp levelled it with a deflected shot in the second half and the tide really seemed to be turning in Arsenal's favour when United's Roy Keane got sent off.

As the game ticked into injury-time, United keeper Peter Schmeichel denied Arsenal a chance to clinch victory, keeping out a Bergkamp penalty.

And it was Ryan Giggs, who stole the honours for United with what is remembered as arguably one of the greatest goals of all time.

The Welshman weaved his way through the Arsenal defence and rifled the ball beyond David Seaman.

Manchester United went on to lift the FA Cup and complete a brilliant treble.

Both managers remember that match as the turning point of their seasons.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger refused to shake hands with his arch-rival Sir Alex Ferguson after the final whistle.

The pair are probably already sharpening their wits for another tactical battle in the fifth-round scheduled for the 16/17 February.

What are the chances of another classic to turn the 2007/2008 season one way or the other?

This could be as tight as any of their previous encounters . Not an awful lot between the sides however no question who plays the more attractive football . Utd need some real holding midfield players with attitude . Their performance on Saturday lacked conviction with too few players prepared to lay themselves on the line .

Giggs is getting on and he and Scholes both need space to work their stuff . Keane used to be the man who provided them with that - always there, the link between the back and front . They need a fiece strong committed holding midfield player . I dont see them winning anything in this form except the F.A Cup and that could be a tall order given the fact that Arsenal can beat them and will want to beat them badly to proove a point and to booste teir growing confidence.

Quite frankly Anderson, Carrick, Hargreaves , Fletcher and Park dont command the same respect as the old guard and teams are starting to take advantage of this - especially through the middle . I feel Arsenal will do the same on Saturday .

Apart from that without key players like Rooney and Evra ( as in the City game ) they lose so much going forward . Ronaldo and Nani become pretty non effective . Blame it on international games or whatever you like - the fact of the matter remains .

Poor John O Shea deserved better. He is a great player and a great servant to the club . Arsenal on the other hand are sharp, skillful ,consistent creative and really sarting to look like champions elect. So dontt be suprised to see United lose at home for the second week in a row against an in form Arsenal side brimming with belief and with a major point to proove .

Arsenal will win the FA cup through the rival Manchester Utd.Arsenal team's football abilities become more improve and improve and united.I like arsenal. They don't buy much good players but they train youths to be good players. This is the fact that I like Arsene Wenger. He got the ability to build the strongest team whatever it takes.I strongly believe that Arsenal will win his big rival Manchester Utd.

Lets get it right from the off . Its Man U vs Arsenal, not the other way round. The game is in Manchester at Old Trafford with homeground advantage crucial especially for Utd after the loss against City.

The Gunners are looking good and playing great football , all around the park but especially in the midfield where I feel they have the advantage. On Saturday Utd looked lost without Evra and Rooney both crucial to the cause.Their abscence was clearly apparent and especially in midfield where Giggs and Scholes have both lost a yard of pace thesedays and
need more room to work their magic. Dont be suprised to see them singled out for special attention.

As for John O Shea who I love he looked forlorn & floundering in the left back position . Get with the programme Alex and put him in a holding midfield role from kick off . He's more than solid enough and with the support he'd get Utd would get back the
staunchness they dont
have between front and back in the buisness area Roy Keane used to frequent.Rather O Shea than Hargreaves,Carrick or Anderson giving away
the ball like it Xmas .

There were far too many
basic errors on Saturday with Utd really looking like they lacked guts
where it counts. To get back to winning ways they have to address this now or it could be their undoing. They must win on Saturday - its a huge game.

Of course we all know Arsene Wenger - Respect !Fabregas, Hleb , Flamini and co will surely try to exploit Utd in that area. The point is they have the skill and players to deliver . Utd will really have to be on their toes. Ultra sharpe.

In Utds defence after the double league defeat for the 1st time in three decades spirits cant be soaring . They have to pick themselves up and now.

They should have the resources and character to bounce back but it wont be easy. However
they will be revved to the max for this game.
If they put on a really
sound display of attacking football at its best with the RIGHT team selection they can demolish any side and
that includes Arsenal .

More importantly a
win means so much to both sides. For Utd a win over Arsenal will be just the thing needed at this stage to boost their confidence and put there season back on track . I see this as the most important game for them.

Swifty's prognosis: Im all for Utd to win 2-1 with a brilliant Ronaldo goal in the 90th minute to finish them off. Yeah !

Swifty's Team selection:

Van der Sar, Brown ,Ferdinand, Vidic Evra, O Shea , Giggs Scholes, Ronaldo ,Rooney Teves .

Arsenal for no doubt playing some eyes cathing futbol at the moment. They surely desevered to be where they are at the moment. They are simply great team with gr8 attitude and style of futbol they play is simply joy to watch. Hopefully it will be one hell of a cracker game to watch. And no doubt Arsenal sud come up with another massive win. cos we (Arsenal) belive in our team and fans like us are always besides them no matter what. Lets KICK-ASS Man U out of all the compition. They are only talking cheap craps. GO GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I reckon this will be the let down of the round.

A stale 0-0, or 1-1 is more than likely !!! I really hope isn't because (I'm going and) both teams can do without a replay.

I'll justify this a bit more. Arsenal are playing well ATM, United not quite so (but still good!!), but Man U will not want to loose again at home, but can see Arsenal just doing enough.

I don't expect either team to put out a full strength team either!

It will be cautious and cagey and trying to keep basic errors to a minimum . Still I do
think that both teams will want to win and finish the other off . Anything less than a full strength side from either would be an insult to the fixture .

Get it over with finish them off and move forward and at this point Utd have more to lose from another defeat than Arsenal . I expect full strength sides especially from Utd .
