Gilcrist has now retired. Once Hayden and Ponting are gone Australia will finally be beatable. Can't wait! Cricket has been boring cos the bloody aussies keep on winning!

Prefer to beat the might of the Aussies rather than a weak Aussi team which is what has happened to the Windies.

Once the Aussies enter this cycle, it will take them another 10 to 15 years to come back up again, again like the Windies, however yet the Aussies are the best but the gap keeps on closing every day and I reckon they would still be on top for another 12 to 15 month.

what about bracken? He must be good enough to play in the test side. Top bowler

Why would you want a bowler like Bracken who is used to thinking about his bowling, when you could just have someone who is going to hurl it as fast as he can without and real guile? Sounds like a backward step to me smiley

As they say, all good things come to an end, and we have had a great run.
Gilly, like Warne, is a once-in-century phenomenon and his shoes will be pretty nearly impossible to fill.
We have a good, competitive, system in place, so I don't think we will suffer a total collapse like the Windies, but no doubt we'll come back to the field.
It's hard to see any team achieving the same sort of dominance in the immediate future. Let's not forget most of India's stars are ageing too.

I doubt Oz will collapse. There are possible/probable Test class players in each State who aren't playing at the moment: Hussey, Hilfenhaus, Voges, Marsh, Katich (most prolific batsman in the country this year, including the current Test players), Haddin, et al. Most of these players would be first choice if the Test players weren't there.

Gilchrist was the strongest weapon in Australia's armoury. Opponents feared declaring against Australia even with a lead of 400/500 or an asking rate of 5 or 6 an over for they knew Oz had in Gilly a person who could make any target achievable.

With Gilchrist gone, I guess more teams will feel confident in setting sporting targets for Australia in test matches rather than bat out a draw.

I have never thought that our star players would be that easily replaceable, how can they be? If they were, it would mean that they weren't as special as we thought (know!) they were. I think there will be far more competitive series re: Oz v whoever, which will be good for cricket.

Gilly hasn't been the force that he was for a couple of years, but he was still very dangerous when firing. Purely on an emotional basis, I will miss knowing that Gilly is out on the field far more than I will miss Warne's competitive nature or McGrath inspired consistency.

I am always a little amused by those that predict the downfall of Australian cricket when this or that player retires.

While they were very special, Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist etc...the same system that produced them is producing more and other stars will emerge.

Anyway, who is going to beat them? Harmy? If they can talk him out of the dressing room..come on son, it'll be alright...there's my boy....you're a star...

Freddie? Vaughan?

and so on.........I wouldn't dance on the grave of Aussie cricket until we have sorted out our own backyard. lol.

Having said all that...a more competitive international competition would be welcome. winkeye

Gilchrist has been a great cricketer and true ambassador to the game. He is a role model for so many young players. He is surely going to be missed!!!
