Does she lack anything for her to be a real top athlete.

Re: sandcastlejim. If you've seen Jessica Ennis in the high jump or Carolina Kluft in the long jump, you might conclude that the multi-eventers are the only people worth talking about.

Seriously, couldn't you say that the triple jump is a joke event? Or the discus? Like you said, an athlete aims to do the best in what they do. Heptathlon is arbitrary in the skills it tests, just like any other sport.

A wonderful opportunity for Jessica Ennis and Kelly Sotherton to win gold in Beijing. The very best of luck to them. We hope it's gold and silver for GB, like it was in the women's 400 metres at the World Championship last year for Christine Ohuruogu and Nicola Sanders!

"Britons boosted by Kluft opt-out2" Quite an embarrassing title if you ask me so GB only hope for a medal in this event is if a better athlete pulls out due to inadequate competition, and this something to be excited about. What kind of example does defeatist attitude set for upcoming heptathletes?

Eunice Barber only 33? I would say she is the main contender.

Hei, Sandcastlejim, try telling Denise Lewis that the Heptathlon is a Micky Mouse event. Gold and bronze, a true allround athlete. An inspiration to Jessica and Kelly.

Sandlecastlejim - quite an appropriate name really! Remember Daley Thompson? Trying telling him that multi-events are a cop-out!
Always easy to be the critic! What have YOU ever done?

At the moment in Gotzis, Austria, Jessica Ennis is competing in the traditional pre major championships Heptathlon. You can follow her progress at

Interesting to see a great PB in the shot put from Jessica. With the 200m a very strong event for her, she can perhaps go into an overnight lead going into the second day.

Jessica finished day 1 in second place. Bogdanova is in the lead by just over 30 points. Day 2 will be very interesting. Jessica will need a very good long jump and one of those 42-43m javelin throws to set up the finale of a close run 800m. Am I the only one following this! I could do with someone to chat with.

I have just seen on the bbc sport pages that Jessica has withdrawn from the second day with an ankle injury. I hope the injury is just a temporary setback.
