Africa Cup of Nations - Day Six

African Nations Cup
comment on the article

We're heading back to Group B for today's Africa Cup of Nations action and we have two fascinating encounters on offer for your delectation.

The tournament has been rocked by the news that Benin coach Reinhard Fabisch was asked to fix his side's opening game with Mali, a match they lost 1-0.

Whether that effects the Squirrels as they face Ivory Coast in today's first match remains to be seen, but the Elephants will be looking for a repeat of their performance in the 1-0 win over Nigeria.

Tonight's clash pits Africa's top ranked team (according to FIFA rankings) Nigeria against Mali, with both teams looking for a win for different reasons.

That's enough of my rambling; I want your thoughts on today's action.

Will there be any surprises today? Can Nigeria bounce back from defeat and prove the doubters wrong?

I'll do my best to guide you through all the action, so sit back, relax and GET INVOLVED as we hopefully enjoy another feast of African football.

Nigeria should have had teams like
Angola, senegal,Zambia,Sudan, Namibia,Guinea etc in our group I am very sure we'll have been home and dry into the Q-finals by now.

Interesting posts. I agree it has been a disappointing tournament so far for Nigeria but I am a die hard Nigerian soccer fan.

The irony of all this is that the team have not played together for long and everyone is expecting them to be cohesive and play like the giants or superstars that they are. We all forget about the local players that got Nigerian into the Cup of Nations, the talents that are homegrown and are more hungrier than this so called assembly of stars from Europe.

This team have zero midfield or a maestro like Okocha, that can be inspiratonal and no one is passionate in thier lack lustre performance so far...People used to take pride in playing for their national team but here we have a bunch of well paid stars who are not willing to go all out as they do for their clubs, I guess no one wants to get injured for their country...Nigeria have played average so far in this competition, we have loSt that samba flare that is know with a Nigerian soccer team...

We need to get back to using more homegrown talents as someone put it from the U-17 and U-21 team..any player that is not passionate about playing for Nigeria should not be invited...we are doomed to suffer the same fate as the English team who are well respected on paper for all their stars but play awful football when it comes to competition hence no going to Euro 08...football is a team, passion and entertaining sport, our current team have not shown either....Finally I was suprised that the highest goal scorer for the U-17 world cup is not in this team, atleast he can score...But as a die hard fan whether we win or lose, go Super Eagles....

zatknight: games at high levels are often decided by little mistakes.A lack of concentration here, too much showing off there. That`s exactly what has cost us some important victories in the past.
I never want to see that hapen again. That`s why I´m talking about discipline. You can keep on interpreting that as an attack at our culture.

haha..sack Vogts and then what after?? Nigeria is no longer what it was couple of years ago...they still have decent players but what other teams lack of in terms of talent they make it up in better organization....African football is no longer what it is....Nigeria could have qualified as one of the best runners-up had last minute Ugandan goal unfairly disallowed standed and it should have...They lost against Uganda in kampala, a team made of amateur players..Nigeria needs to focus more on its organizational structures with a better federation professionnaly runn and build on young players and let the coach build his team over the long run...because unless Nigeria gets lucky and fall an easy group for the World Cup qualification stages they won't make it for two tournaments in a row...

Nigeria really do need to sack Vogts his appointment was the wrong one and now its cost nigeria the cup of nations, i think the NFA need to get someone with a bit of african experience and help combine the talents of the team and get them playing football again.

one problem of volts is that he does not understand Nigeria football i do not take him as best coach for eagles.NFA need to look inward by allowing indegeneous coach to takeover from him otherwise come year 2010 nigeria disaster will be great in football.

greeneyedforestgirl-1: As a true naija living in london, when the manager is asked to stand down,it is because that person has shown by his standards that he is not competent to do that job.2:Vogts knew that if the team do not perform to standard level,or show an improvement compaired to that of a local coach then he is good enough.3:This is the nations cup not the world cup or european cup,so when you play friendlies against european countries in cold conditions, and then have the nerve to call yourself experienced BEGGERS belief.4:The teams organisation and preparation falls squarely at the MANAGERS feet.5:He did the same thing in scotland choosing the wrong tactics and players.6:Who the hell are ETUHU,SHITTU,YAKUBU,OLOFINJANA...steamKKKKAAAANU?,u know maybe he's not watching the same premeirship, because when u play 3-4-3,u need one important component a flipping centre foward like drogba or eto'o.

I couldn't agree with you more. People forget the fact that the other teams are as good as our team as well and instead of keeping the team together to build them up, preople are asking for the coach to be fired. That's the more reason naija hasn't made too far in the senior world cup. We're quick to want to find a fix rather than maintain what we have and correct any mistakes we might have made. Win or lose, I personally think the coach should be retained and we should move on and prepare the team (the same squad) for 2010.
