African football's power struggle

comment on the article

Hi, I'm Rob Williams from Sunset and Vine.

We're producing the TV coverage of the Africa Cup of Nations for the BBC, with every game live on BBCi (via your red button) and a nightly highlights programme showing on BBC Three.

During the opening week of the tournament, we're debating the big issues in African football live in our studio at half-time of the late game (2015 GMT). We want to bring your thoughts, questions and opinions into the discussion via 606.

On Friday, our presenter Jake Humphrey will be joined by Garth Crooks and former Nigeria striker Efan Ekoku. They'll be discussing the power struggle in African football between those countries from the north of the continent and those from the west.

The interactive forum will be streamed live on the BBC Sport website as well as on BBCi. If you want to get involved with a question or opinion please include your real name (at least first name) and your country and nearest major city. I'll check in as we prepare to go live and will pass on some of the best contributions to Jake Humphrey, who may give you a namecheck on air.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Nigeria what a shame!when we went to our first world cup in 94 we thought we where on to something. we won the olmpics in 96 and we said yes we are ready to take on the world. 12 years on we have detoriated so badly that we can't even guarantee qualification in the group stage. We have let corruption destroy our nation and now the effects is beginning to show in our football. if we don't qualify from the group stage i think it would be time to consider re-colonoisation. Enough is Enough.

I have got the impression that the nigerian players are not that interested!

No creativity, no passion, no effort. I don't think they know why they are there.

My 8 year old son and I have been watching the ACN and we think it's fabulous. As an Arsenal fan I am interested in the Ivory Coast to see how Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue perform. As we visit Egypt on holidays my son Sam has adopted them as his team. It's always good to see the host nation do well. So far I think it has been an excellent tournament. I agree with "tellitlikeitis" that the West Africans are better exporters of their game but the North Africans are better in Africa.

As an Arsenal fan I am equally dividing my support between Cameroon and Ivory Coast the two teams our players represent, but I have to say Alex Song's international debut was sensational and he surely must start the next game against Zambia, as it turned the game around against Egypt when he came on at half time. Must say that Egypt were excellent thoughout, though Cameroon were the better team in the second half.

i dont understand why nigeria is having problems beaten ivory coast, mali.the way things are going i dont beleive we will even beat benin, and if nigeria cannot beat these countries mention above,i dont think we will qualify for the world cup coming up in south africa, and even if we qualify lets say by mistake. we will go nowhere,i really think something somewhere is wrong with our current eagles,i think they have to bring their act together and do something fast before we will go to the world cup and disgrace ourselves.benny,hocklarmark,germany.

My fellow Nigerians please lets accept it, we are no longer the powerhouse of African football.

Watching Nigeria play last night was as frustrating as watching someone with parkinsons try to put a thread through the eye of a needle. Even though it was a "must win" game they didn't seem to have any eagerness to get a result. Yakubu played like he had 50 quid on the 0-0 draw! (maybe we should read more into this match fixing?!)

On another note, has anyone else noticed that we've yet to see a really decent keeper performance?

On the other hand, Ivory Coast have played some great football and will win the competition hands down if... actually i think it's pretty obvious they have this one in the bag.

Any thoughts?

I keep on hearing which side rules African football North or West African teams. North African teams play better football because they can pay more money for better coaches. West African teams have better players has but can only employ journeyman coaches. West African players tend to play more for Champions League teams because they have the power, pace & skill, while in North Africans power & pace is more rare. That is why North Africans tend to play for more middle ranking teams in Europe. North Africans don't have then natural athleticism that makes them good enoug to complete in world cups while West Africans do. North Africans teams can dominate the African Nations Cup, but West Africans cause more fear to big European & South American team with higher quality players.

people are saying the north africans do dominate the west african in these current african cup of nations, fine.we all know they have the best leauge in afrca, but remember that, what most of the west african nations have done in the world of football, mostly nigeria non of the north of done half of it,they can only shine in their league but not the world of football.benny hocklackmark, germany.

i just want to say nigeria qualify to the quarter finals by luck and miracle, even by beaten benin 2.0,nigeria still dont play good football, this is not nigeria we all knew when taking any team on the pitch they play with all their heart,u see some skillful, entertaining and good defensive football, the nigerian team just have to bring their acts together agaist ghana, they have to play like a team because all their last games they never played like a team, ghana are the host nation besides that, they are good team, nigeria have to come strong and well organise then we will win.benny hocklamark germany.
