Were you there when Hoddle went in goal?

Tottenham Hotspur
comment on the article

Tottenham were involved in some cracking FA Cup matches against Manchester United in the late 70s and early 80s but their third-round replay at Old Trafford on 9 January 1980 was probably the best of the lot.

When goalkeeper Milija Aleksic had his jaw broken, playmaker Glenn Hoddle went in goal - there were no substitute keepers on the bench in those days - and Spurs fans braced themselves for an onslaught.

Despite the best efforts of United striker Joe Jordan, Hoddle held out and Ossie Ardiles popped up in extra-time to send Tottenham through.

Spurs will hope for a similar outcome when they return to Manchester in a fourth-round tie on Sunday.

But were you at Old Trafford 28 years ago, and what do you remember about the likes of Aleksic, Gary Bailey, Paul Miller and Terry Gibson?

PS Thanks for your help in tracking down Oldham legend Roger Palmer, who we were trying to find the whereabouts of in the last round.

Palmer is living in Sale these days and is happy with his low profile, apparently. More importantly, he has not been forgotten by Latics fans.

A Man U fan, I went to this game with my mate who was a Spur. Strangely I had no memory of the Hoddle-in-goal incident until I saw this article. But I do remember Ardiles's brilliant winner at the old scoreboard end. Ah, the bad old days !

Going a bit off the subject I remember United playing Stockport County at home in the League Cup (think it was 1979?)and they played United off the park, though United won 3-2. I remember nearly getting a smack in the face for slating Jordan & McQueen. (though I used to go and watch County on a Friday night under Mike Sumerbee - Go Go Go County!!) Happy days the 1970's as I could afford to watch Best, Law Charlton one week and Bell, Lee & Sumerbee the next week at Maine Road + Stockport County on a Friday night & Hyde United if they played midweek! No applying for tickets - simply pay yer money on the gate when you turn up. Happy days - never to be seen again Im afraid (till the bubble bursts) & the crying shame is that kids cant afford to do that nowadays & when you tell them what games you watched they dont believe you!

I can remember the goal well as my position in the North stand was directly behind Ardiles as he pulled the trigger - saw the ball curl beautifully around Gary Bailey's fingertips. I can remember when Hoddle went in goal I thought we'd get a right tonking.
I was lucky to get in as it was a lock out & stood with my arms trapped by my sides most of the game. Can remember the GMP on horses being ever delicate in their crowd control, but then that was pre Heysel/Hillsbrough
Had to wait 'til I got to Oxford Road station to give a celebratory cheer then walk back to Hulme Hall.

I was a 12 year old boy stood in the Scoreboard Paddock that night. You could see the goal coming for Spurs in ET, they deserved it and it was a belter from Ardiles.Again I don't remember Hoddle going in goal, what I do remember of Hoddle was that unbelievable chipped goal away at Watford, the boy was a genius. The United v Spurs game was a night match if I remember, and I walked back to the bus stop to take me home to Salford feeling pretty gutted. Though I have to say the likes of Sammy Mclroy (Super Sam),Skip to ma Lou Macari, Stevie Coppell and Big Joe Jordan and the one and only Paul Mcgrath who was on the bench that night were quality players and bring back some great memories. Always a great game United v Spurs. Bigger prize now my brother in law to be is a Yiddo, so can't wait for Sunday.

I remember it well ! I had cramp all the way through extra time and had to stay on as we had used all of our subs ! Sorry forgot to mention we only had 1 back in those days. To be fair I was only 17 and a couple of weeks old and it was my 3rd 1st team game in just over a week. Back at the team hotel as we were staying in Manchester for the weekends game v City I had my 1st alcoholic drink. The champagne was flowing and just as I was going to have my 1st taste I was given a severe rollocking by Terry Yorath and sent to bed ! Leaving my room partner Glenn Hoddle to finish it off for me! Fantastic memories.

I remember watching the match on TV. The Jordan challenge was anything but 'accidental' in the Fashanu style and should be erased from the game. Aleksic suffered head and chest injuries and didn't play again in the first team for almost a year. Ossie's goal, from the edge of the box, in the last minute of extra time was described by him as 'the goal of my life'. He finally got his dream the following year when, after languishing with sub- standard forwards for two seasons after their promotion, Burkinshaw, in the space of a few summer weeks in 1980, invested in Archibald and Crooks. We now had the artillery to match the ammunition supplied by that magic midfield, going on to reach four cup finals in the next four years, winning three. All went to extra time, with two going to replays. Four years later, in the FA Cup third round Jan 83 at Fulham, we again lost our keeper, Ray Clemence to injury. Although Hoddle was on the pitch that day, it was Graham Roberts who took over in goal, performing admirably in a 0-0 draw . We won the reply 2-0 with goals from Archibald.....and Roberts!

I was a young police officer on duty behind the goal where Ardiles scored. As I recall it was a beautiful curling shot from the right hand corner of the box as I looked at it (Ardiles' left), and I also recall seeing it on the TV that night, so there must be footage of it somewhere. I had forgotten about Hoddle going in goal, though I do remember the Spurs' goalkeeper's horrendous injury - no keepers on the bench in those days. My main memory however was that it was my first exposure to some horrible anti-semitic abuse by a section of the United support. The Spurs fans were no angels either, with their Munich references and plane impressions. Thankfully, we've moved on a lot since then.

I watched it on Sportsnight that evening.
Keeper looked in a bad way after that awful challenge. Hoddle went in goal a few times for Spurs and usually did well. When Ossie scored it was a wonderful moment. Fingers crossed we can get the same result tomorrow.

PS if tinyGibbo9 is Terry Gibson I saw you make his debut for us, Home v Stoke I think, got his shirt ripped in half by a defender (Richards?) trying to keep up with him.

Happy days.

Hi Ashelfsider.
tinygibbo9 here. Yes that is me. Still got the shirt from that day, pride of place ! It was Mike Doyle who trod all over me. So many people remember that game and as a shelfsider myself making my debut for my team was 1 of the proudest days of my life. Come on you Spurs !

Hi tinygibbo9. I was on the shelf and we were roaring you on chasing the through ball over and over. That defender would have got 5 reds today but all part of the game then and it was a great battle to watch. The cup game at OT was a real achievement unfortunately not repeated yesterday but we still played well. Thanks for replying and all the best for the future.
