Kevin Keegan Cup memories

comment on the article

Kevin Keegan is back at Newcastle - and straight away he is plunged into FA Cup action with a tantalising fourth-round tie against Arsenal on Saturday.

Since starring in Liverpool's 1974 demolition of the Magpies, there have been many memorable Keegan-related moments - as outlined here news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

So Kev's had a long-standing love affair with the Cup. But what are your favourite memories of him?

It's funny that I have read the same myth twice this week on this BBC site perpetuated about Keegan when he finished as a player. He didn't leave his last league game in a helicopter. There was a friendly with Liverpool afterwards cringingly billed as 'Auf Wiedersehen Kev'where they had this dramatic exit.

As a season ticket holder at Newcastle, I am delighted that he is back. Despite everyone saying that we have unrealistic expectations, we know that he won't win us the league or even the cup, but we will be entertained and that is enough. In fact, call me sad, but I would rather watch a Newcastle defeat with him as manager than another dreary Chelsea win.

My memory of Keegan in the cup was when he destroyed us in the final in 1974 - it could have been 10-0. Having said that, considering he has been so successful as a player and a manager, it is surprising that he only won it once.

The best is he's only won the Cup once, nearly 34 years ago.

What about Managers who have won the Double, or Treble. Managers who's lengthy career may have been much shorter had they not beaten Nottingham Forest in the last minute.

Best of all would be all time Cupsets. With Prem teams dropping like flies and the game everyone wants to see yet you seem to be ignoring.

Liverpool v Havant & Waterloo.

As a Leicester fan, I remember that lob over shilts to put Liverpool 2-1 up in the Villa park replay. Afterthat, they took over, and ascored a third shortly after to run our worthy 3-1 winners. It was more than just a lob though. As the ball was played into him just outside our box, he controlled the ball with on touch, and before the ball had touched the ground he lifed it up and over shilton, who just looked over hios shoulder to see the basll in the net behind him, all in on magic moment. I was upset to loose the game of course, but it was a piece of skill you don't see every week.
Shame Leicester did not draw Burnley in the semi, who were demolished 3-0 by newcastle. Leicester would have given Liverpool a decent game at Wembley...and who knows what might have hapened?
Best of luck to you Kev...

Boring. Nobody cares, he'll probably quit at half-time on Saturday. "I just wasn't good enough."

My favourite Keegan memory was him linking up with Brooking for a glorius 1-2 and scoring against Scotland at Wembley in 1979 and my worst is also in an England shirt when he headed wide against Spain at the World Cup Finals in 1982

I have to say that although I accept people's criticism of him that he walks away when the going gets tough it's something I quite like about him, he's honest and self effacing and is fallible like us all. Rare qualities these days. I hope he can work the magic for Newcastle, the fans deserve it.

Just remind us all here in 606land just why the newcastle fans deserve it. I must have missed the day when they didn't criticise, boo, spit, swear and get every manager they have had sacked when the going gets tough. Support a league 2 team, you'll know what tough is.
