It's just to protect the big boys. Imagine (although very unlikely) if Gregory scored the winner... Liverpool kick up a fuss. The F.A are just acting now to protect the bigger club in the future.

The FA are scared of creating a precedent. Obviously they don't mind him playing, but if he does then they will create something for the Lawyers to screw them with. Would a Premier league side take advantage of a past precedent to allow them to field one of their first 11? Yes!

H&W will still field 11 players, so this means that someone else will get the chance to live the dream.

How cruel it would be to him if the FA changed their mind (which they won't so it is all a bit academic really).

Anyone know what the penalty would be if H & W played him anyway?
Presumably if they win they'll be thrown out of the cup for playing an ineligible player - well that's not going happen.
They'll probably be fined a couple of grand as well but given what they'll make from the Anfield game that hardly matters.
I'd be tempted to play Gregory for half the match and the guy that would have replaced him for the other half and take the consequences.

This is what they call "The magic of the FA Cup." The dream that even the lowliest amateur player's team can win a trip to the land of the giants - and then some jobsworth at the FA can poke him with a stick and wake him up.

I totally agree with some of the earlier comments about how often a player in this league would get a chance to play in such a game. The F.A are a disappointing bunch of uncaring idiots. Let's hope Havant get at least a draw then justice would be served.

Its a mean spirited decision and shows how out of touch the FA are with the romance of the Fa cup.

the F.A should ask liverpool if they would mind if they played the player, if they say yes, then everyone can jump on liverpool and say what a bunch of This and that, and the player can say they were scared of me. and if they say no then the player gets his game and no one can complain.

either way everyones a winner!!!
