Murray's loss to Tsonga not looking so bad!

I am no particular fan of or apologist for Andy Murray. In fact I would certainly not choose him as the standard bearer for British Tennis but we are where we are.

Since beating Murray in a fairly closely contested match Tsonga has really done some damage and looks to be on the verge of making his breakthrough as one of the top players - especially on hardcourts which suit his weapons and style of play. He will certainly be taken very seriously by all opponents now and it will be interesting to see if weaknesses in his game are identified and exploited now that he is well and truly in the mix.

I was quick to knock Murray after his loss to Tsonga on the back of all the media hype about Murray being a potential winner and his Mum singing about the improvements to his fitness, serve and forehand since he parted with Brad Gilbert. But seeing what Tsonga has done since I now think I will reserve judgment on Murray and his progress, or lack of, for the time being. Tsonga was certainly a nightmare first round draw for a number 9 seed to get and I dare say on the form he is showing he would have put out a number of other top 10 players had they met him in the first round.

Barnzy88 no disrespect but you really got me laughing. What has Murray really accomplished so far in tennis for you to say such a ridiculous comment? "Murray on his day could beat all up to the semis" That is so laughable!!

=======
while it would have been a tough draw, its just such a shame as Murray on his day could beat all up to the semis..

OK francotirado I'm confused. Which one of these players would make you laugh with surprise if Murray beat them?

World number 172 Warburg?
World number 86 Garcia-Lopez

Or perhaps Mikhail Youzhny... who has lost the only match he's ever played against Murray?

You don't know much about tennis do you? doh

Nadal is a great player, no doubt. Of all the young players (under 23), i see only him and Djokovic as actual threats to supplant Federer as #1...the rest are pretenders to the throne. That being said, i had no idea Tsonga was this good. I knew he had talent, but not like this! With the type of tennis he is playing now, he can beat any of the Triumvirate: The Federal Express, Pirate Pants, and the Joker! biggrin

jaffa cake --are you Murray in disguise ?? the only press on murray if you saw the bbc replay was his mum talking about how he gets his hair cut and he is unsure long vs short !!!!! help !!
I am with Franco and all the others the british tv pundits are hanging on to hopes to keep themselves in the media. and what about the teenager sent home for bad behaviour by the LTA--have yiu watched murray --throw up-scream obsecenties when he fell on court-kick baskets after losing to other no hopers--he is one big loser--the rest of the players act friendly and professionally not like the yob you and others promotes.

Anyone who claims Murray is rubbish should keep their mouths closed. Your talking nonsense. He's ranked 9 in the world. How can the currently 9th most successful player in the world be rubbish? Plus he's only at the start of his career. He lost to one of the inform and up and coming players. First round or not, this is no disgrace.

People seem to systematically rubbish the top British tennis players. They ignore success and focus on the failures. I don't understand why.

tenniswatchermaybe you are reading it wrong. Yes some folks just want Murray to crawl and never play tennis again. I like the kid and the way he plays, but the problem is his low self steam. For anybody to love a player you gotta be a fighter. He lacks that. He comes to a match saying things like, "I will be lucky if I can beat fed." Or " I dont think that i can win this match." In many occasions that has been his mental state. Another thing is that when he is a bit injured then he calls it quick. the botton line is that before the first ball has been tossed in his mind he has lost the match. People love winners and they also root for the underdog, but my god, give it all you can and fight for it iwth a top attitude. Every body loves a fighter even if his changes of winning is only 1 to 1000!!
Nadal is not the most gracious player to watch on the court but with his powerful mind and "lemme get to each single ball" attitude is hard NO to root for him. He is a fighter and even if he is down 2 sets he will fight for each ball as if he is two games away from winning a grand slam.

No, TheOpinion, the point I am making is that the anti-Murray fans are always so quick to rubbish him.
Tsonga played a strong winning game, but some of the ridiculous anti-Murray comments about the match never cease to amaze.
