Remembering the genius of Garrincha

International Brazil
comment on the article

25 years ago on Sunday, Brazil legend Garrincha finally succumbed to alcoholism and died on a drip in a Rio de Janeiro hospital.

Football lost one of its greatest ever entertainers - a man who gave so much joy to so many people with the sheer uncomplicated brilliance with which he played the game.

Garrincha was a superstar. He was one of the finest players of all time and he left a truly phenomenal legacy for Brazilian football to follow.

On this, the anniversary of his death, the game has a chance to reflect on what Garrincha achieved and pay tribute to his genius.

Tell us what Garrincha means to you.

"ive never heard of him. Lets face facts though, christiano ronaldo would tear this old peg leg to shreds."

If you don't know who Garrincha was MartinJols, how can you have an opinion about him? Only an idiot makes comments about things they know nothing about.doh

Also, as pointed out by uncle_bertram; talent doesn't change, its the science behind sport that evolves. Players in the 60's had just as much talent as players now, if not more, considering back then there was a greater emphasis on skill and technique, as appose to today's game, which is obsessed with athleticism.

If Pele, Best and Garrincha were playing today, they would have access to the latest knowledge in regard to fitness, diet and training and believe me, they would be on a level above C Ronaldo or Messi; who are good players, but still have much to prove.

My advice to you; learn about the history of the game, until you do, its an insult to call yourself a real football fan.

christiano ronaldo would tear this old peg leg to shreds."-outrageous comment obviously someone has been fooled by the Man Utd (Everything we achieve has to be the most glorious/best ever) publicity machine. I too watched the bbc documentary (the sort of quality they should always produce but dont) and Garrincha was awesome-he can really be called a 'great' that much misused term...

Great footballer.

And for those of you who have only recently got into football because it is "popular" (like Tim Lovejoy, what a c**k!), you need to understand that people like Ronaldo are only as good as they are because they had people like Garrincha to inspire them when they were growing up. Buy him for your Master League team and see! He's the mut's nuts!

Also, the fact that he could play like this with what most people would describe as a "disability" just strengthens the point that he is one of the greatest ever.

Great player, just like Best literally pi$$ed his life down the toliet, shame as they were both fantastic players.

PS:i dont know if anyones mentioned this, cos i havent had the time to read all the comments, but Garrincha lost his virginty to a goat, and not only that Pele, lost his to a guy that all the Brazilian players at that time regualrly visitedyikes

There was an not so good indoor league at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in the 1970s. Greaves , Banks and other assorted just finished stars showed up along with Garrincha. Mesmorized would be the only way to describe what he could do with a ball , even in the confines of a Hockey rink...It's one of those memories I cherish

I feel great and proud to have the happiness to be present in many games played by this extraordinary and unique soccer player. I am use to say that he was not from Earth but from another planet. Pele was the greatest soccer player due to his technique and athleticism, but Garrincha was very beyond just this two elements... He was an extra-terrestrial soccer player, like him never more will be possible to witness and not even close player. He is the first and only player able to make everybody happy and willing to be present to another soccer game... When I say everybody means that did not matter for or to whom you were cheering, he was beyond rivalries.
