NFL Championship games - preview

comment on the article
Its going to be cold in Green Bay

It all seemed to be going to plan last weekend as the leading seeds, New England and Green Bay progressed through to the conference championship games – the Super Bowl semi-finals.

Then everything was turned upside-down on Sunday as San Diego and the New York Giants sprang upsets, the Chargers over Indianapolis and the Giants against Dallas.

Can they do it again? I reckon San Diego stand a small chance and the Giants a better one, but neither will spend the next fortnight preparing for Super Bowl XLII.

American Football Conference: San Diego at New England, Sunday 2000 GMT, Sky Sports 2

San Diego were last year’s play-off top seed but crashed out to the Patriots 24-21 in the divisional round by allowing the visitors to score 10 points in the final five minutes. This year it’s the Pats who hold all the cards (and they are favoured by around 15 points).

With victory here New England would become the first ever team to go 18-0 in a season, one better than the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who played a shorter regular season.

They scored a league record 589 points while quarterback Tom Brady and receiver Randy Moss set new marks with 50 touchdown passes and 23 TD receptions respectively.

Meanwhile, the Chargers began the season under new coach Norv Turner in disarray before putting together an eight-match winning run.

With Shawne Merriman and Luis Castillo to the fore, the Chargers will bring more pressure than Brady has seen for most of the year, which could make things fun.

Brady will eventually find one of his let-out valves – Wes Welker running underneath, tight end Ben Watson or back Laurence Maroney on the screen – but it may take him a little time to click.

Were the Chargers in better shape offensively, they would be able to exploit that but injuries will limit the league’s leading rusher, LaDainian Tomlinson, QB Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates.

Even if receivers Vince Jackson and Chris Chambers – whose mid-season trade from Miami was key to the upturn in fortunes – step up as they did last weekend in Indy, the Bolts will struggle to impose themselves on Rodney Harrison et al.

Prediction: Chargers 24-31 Patriots

National Football Conference: New York Giants at Green Bay, Sunday 2330 GMT, Sky Sports 2

Which genius planned an evening game for Green Bay with temperatures expected to be around minus 15C at kick-off? Last week’s blizzard, which saw the Packers emerge from a white-out to beat Seattle may have looked pretty from home but it won’t be much fun at Lambeau Field.

This is the sixth time two of the NFL’s oldest members have met in the championship game, although it is the first since the NFL and AFL merged, and created the Super Bowl in 1966.

Although the offences these two sides run normally bear no resemblance to those that battled it out at the Polo Grounds in 1938 or Wisconsin State Fair Park the following year, ground games should feature heavily as TV commentators compete to be the first to use the phrase “frozen tundra”.

Giants back Brandon Jacobs is an old-fashioned bruiser, although he has surprising pace to the outside.

His Packer counterpart Ryan Grant – traded by the Giants in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick last summer but a revelation since midseason – is faster and flashier, although his two early fumbles against Seattle almost stopped his side getting this far.

Passing is likely to be short, with greybeard Green Bay QB Brett Favre aiming to set a new mark for the longest time between Super Bowl starts – it would be 10 years since he last played in the big game – and Eli Manning aiming to continue the improved consistency he has shown in the second half of the season.

This one will be tight, with New York’s defensive front causing problems for Favre, but Green Bay’s home-field advantage should take its toll, just.

Prediction: Giants 14-17 Packers

Season predictions so far 15-7

Laurence Maroney isn't a frequent Brady outlet on the screen. He caught all of four passes during the regular season.

You probably meant to mention Kevin Faulk, Maroney's backup at running back. He caught 47 passes, and usually plays on passing downs because he's a superior blocker.

If the chargers can holt Manning, then if they play up to that level again i cant see why they cant trouble Brady. An early interception or sack on Brady could really knock the pats off their stride, and if the crowd get restless and the team frustrated then who knows. LT must play, and if rivers can keep his head then the chargers will score points. If the chargers do win, i believe theyhave to keep the pats to below 25 points, tough but achieveable. Though the pats should win i'm going to stick my head out for a 27 - 24 win for the chargers. Maybe i'm saying this because im a Giants fan who doesnt really fancy the pats at the superbowl, for a perfect season. I just hope Eli can keep his form up for the Giants tonight, who will break Favre's heart with a 16 - 14 win. I bet i'm going to look a right fool tomorrow.

This one WILL be very close, particularly if the secondary guys are healthy enough and as a Giants fan I have to predict 24-21 for the G-men. However, the Packers are certainly one of the more likable franchises and there are worse things in life than losing to a 38 year old Brett Favre. Both teams have overperformed this season. Looks like a long sleepless night for me smiley

Please don't call the conference championship games the super bowl semi-finals. Also, are the Packers playing in both matches tonight? Not very impressive from the BBC old chap.

Hoping the Packers clinch the Championship and reach the Superbowl.

I can't see past the Pats beating San Diego, but I am rather nervous about the game with the Giants, especially with Mannings resurgance.

Also, seriously, if you don't like American sport, don't comment! It's that easy. I think Basketball is possibly the only sport I could never watch, but I don't mouth off on their boards.

I've never been able to get to a Packers game but did go to a UW Badgers game in -20 degrees. It was amazing - particularly the BBQ in the car park before the game.

Packers to win by 10

Michigan_Blade, you're right of course - I was thinking third down screen and didn't double check the stats.

It's interesting how little an affect Maroney has had on the ground this year (although I wasn't so objective when he was failing to perform for my fantasy team).

In this game, Brady seems to have had most of his success from the five-receiver set, although Faulk has often been one of the five.

MHLF150, roll with it - it's a term international fans understand. You can't claim the conference championships mean anything in themselves anymore.

Should have guessed Turner would have success against them, given the relative success of hard-running teams against them. Tomlinson may as well stay on the sideline.

That was classic New England defence - bending but not breaking. There was nothing spectacular but everyone did just enough to keep San Diego out of the end zone.

Brady was hurried all day but the Pats offence is so versatile, switching from the four- and five-receiver sets of the first half, when they were relatively ineffective, to add extra tight ends and concentrate on the run.

And there was a crucual Maroney screen in there as well as the back's 106 yards rushing in the second half!

I thought that was never going to end. I was stuck in a purgatory where Scottish-born kickers with Florida accents continually shank field goals.

Thankfully, Lawrence Tynes connected from 47 yards, the Green Bay faithful were allowed to go home and warm up and I can head to bed.

Eli Manning was clinical once again, although New England will surely deal with Plaxico Burress more comprehensively in two weeks' time.

New York's front seven dealt with Brett Favre and the Green Bay offence just as they dealt with Tony Romo and Dallas a week ago, harrying and rushing even if they didn't come up with sacks. By the time overtime came up, you had no idea how the Pack were going to get down the field.

Who would have guessed the team that looked only marginally less woeful than Miami at Wembley in October would be playing for the NFL Championship in February?
