for the position of Scotland manager.

I hope he gets appointed, if only to close the circle - Billy Davies was succeeded by Paul Jewell who was succeeded by Steve Bruce (Chris Hutchings having a short spell in between) who was replaced by Alex McLeish who is succeeded by Billy Davies.

Addendum (15 January 2008)

Billy Davies rules himself out of the Scotland position news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/foo... . Oh well, another dream dies.

In the meantime, I continue to keep the managerial score across the English leagues www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A31102... .

In all honesty, does anyone want Tommy Burns to get the job?

none of them would breed any confidence with me Davies only wanted the job as he seen what Big Eck did use it to get a job at a club after getting the heave ho from rangers, knowing the SFA they will go for the cheapest option

I think the main problem is that the person who does this job needs extensive European experience. In the end, that was the main quality that Walter Smith brought to the job.

That leaves only one man, Souness. Billy Davies went to Europe on holiday once, Mark McGhee has no track record in England, far less Europe. Tommy Burns and george Burley played in Eurpe when balls still had laces. While Tommy Burns was no.2 for a while, he was never much of a trophy collector as a manager and he was making the decisions. And George Burley might be a good back up because he has the coaching brain to work it out.

I think Mark McGhee has done a great job at Motherwell but you don't give a guy the national manager's job because he did well for six months. Get real.

I think it's quite funny that Davies has "withdrawn" from the race. I'm sure the fact he wasn't getting an interview had nothing to do with him withdrawing!!!

From that list I think it looks likely to be Mark McGhee. I would personally go for Burley but I don't think he'll get it.

I cannot believe how Chick Young, Hugh Keevins and the other so called 'pundits' have continually plugged Mark McGhee for the Scotland job from the minute it became vacant. Had these people tried to push Strachan or Smith or their predeccesors for the vacancy they would have been shouted down and there would have been an outcry ..... but no ..... just when a 'smaller' club are getting things right they don't want them to be too suddesful or in a position to challenge their beloved Old Firm so try to prise the manager away ..... I hope Souness gets the job and leaves McGhee to finish his job at Fir Park ..... then we'll hear Chick Young and Co. bleating !!!

Honestly... does anyone rate anything Chick Young writes? Yet more utter mince from someone who doesn't quite catch the breeze as he attempts being the 'common man' in his articles. Low level, drossy opinion and comment that offers little to the average reader.

Scotland does not have a meaningful game till the autumn - if we are to have McGee,let him finish the season @ Motherwell, whats the rush?

I think the SFA should have included Kenny Dalglish on the shortlist.
Scotland legend and has won with more than one club as a manager. Ok, the Celtic thing was a fiasco, but other than that his managerial record was fairly good.
I think Souness' Newcastle spell was poor, Davies needs more and better top flight experience and haven't seen all that much on Burley.
Ferguson or Moyes would be good, but neither of them would do it.
