Where next for Newcastle?

Premier League Newcastle United
comment on the article

Newcastle had prepared Harry Redknapp an offer he could not refuse - except that he somehow resisted the temptation to leave Portsmouth for St James' Park.

Redknapp was owner Mike Ashley's Plan A after Sam Allardyce's sacking, but now he must cast his eyes elsewhere for a new manager.

The proposed appointment of Redknapp sparked mixed feelings among Newcastle fans - as has his surprise refusal, although BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson believes the trail to Portsmouth has not yet gone cold.

So who might be next in line after Redknapp decided to leave the manager's chair vacant?

The "dream ticket" for Newcastle supporters would be a partnership of former boss Kevin Keegan and Tyneside legend Alan Shearer.

BBC football expert Gavin Peacock said: "I could see a Shearer and Keegan combination as something which would capture Kevin's imagination and reignite that passion he has for the game."

But Keegan is busy running his soccer circus and has stated Manchester City was his last job in management. He is a man of his word, so it would be out of character for him to have such a dramatic change of heart, although Newcastle is the club closest to his heart.

As for Shearer, the message is that the time is not right for him to enter management, although there are whispers there could be a thaw in that position.

Jose Mourinho would be next on the wish list, but he is unlikely to consider Newcastle to be big enough for a manager with his world-wide appeal.

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes has a reputation as an outstanding young manager, and while he did not rule himself in the running on Friday, he did not rule himself out either.

Former Spurs boss Martin Jol is seeking work, and while the theory is he would like to work in the south, Newcastle might appeal - and it is handy for Holland!

Glenn Hoddle has been touted, but his stock has fallen and he would not excite the so-called Geordie Nation.

Gerard Houllier is another name mentioned, but the one-time Liverpool manager has a plum job as technical director with the France Football Federation.

He is still one of the most highly-regarded names in world football, but it is questionable whether Newcastle is the job for him.

The race is wide open once more. Send us your thoughts on who you think should be the next Newcastle manager after Redknapp's snub.

Here are the odds: Mark Hughes 11-8, Alan Shearer 5-2, Martin Jol 5-1, Kevin Keegan 6-1, Jose Mourinho 10-1, Harry Redknapp 10-1, Glenn Hoddle 20-1, Gerard Houllier 20-1.

I have just seen an interview with the Kevin Keegan, it was fairly recent, late 2007, after watching it, I have changed my mind, Keegan is not past it, in fact he seems to be full of passion and power again...seeing that interview and he said he DIDN'T rule out a return to management....a "KEEGAN SHEARER" combo is the one for me.

Why were we even considering Redknapp...because we may be anticipating a relegation battle? I appreciate that he has done wonders at Portsmouth in the last season and a half. I also think he could have got us out of our predicament, got us playing entertaining football too. But I am convinced he is not a Top 6 manager and the size of expectation and demands of managing NUFC would have crushed him. What worries me is that he was Ashley's first choice, a 60 year old manager who deals in players, hand to mouth.

Shearer on his own is a non-starter, with Keegan is a possibility and would electrify the region. Who cares if we don't win the Premiership under them, we would play beautiful football and it would be an adventure, probably with a few good cup wins.
Mourinho too has the power to electrify the club. But if you want longevity and the others are out I would go for Hughes. If I was him and I got the job I would publicly ask Shearer to join my management team. If he refuses then that reflects badly on him. If he accepts he has collective responsibility. Time for Shearer to show his true hand.
Hoddle? That would beggar beleif.

SSN has an interview with Kevin Keegan today!!!
Seems to me like he is just waiting to be asked.
It's just got to be a Keegan Shearer combo.

If mourinho wants to prove how special he is, he should take the job!

If I was Keegan, I would take a 3 year contract for £6million knowing however badly I do, I'll get my money and Shearer will take over ... which is ultimately what the fans (who run Newcastle) want. Shearer will fail and Newcastle will go back to being a top 6 club in the Championship.
Given what the new owner said regarding "listening to the fans in the stands", he'll just continue the tradition of sacking the manager when things go wrong anyway.

Paul Ince with Les Ferdinand as his second in command, both have their coaching badges i think, Sir Les knows what the geordies desire (attacking football) after experiencing it first hand and paul ince is proving him self to be competent as well as being rock 'ard he could command respect and give barton a kick up the rear out of the door. He also keeps on commenting about the lack of black managers in the prem so i'm sure he'd be interested. I think a young manager is required for some stability. Ince has already lived in the North East too.

You're in enough trouble now, without landing someone who's got a racial persecution chip on his shoulder .....

can someone from Newcastle tell me why you have had 8 managers in such a short time. Is it because the goon army live on another planet. If keegan was that great, and he love you lot.then he would still be there.Look how long fergie as been at manu.I think you should forget shearer,he likes it too much at the b b c. Its the easy way out. So much for loyalty. No top manager is going to come to a club that thinks a manager is just for a few short weeks and the change them.

I think the next Newcastle manager should be Jose Mourinho. We have tried local managers with a connection to the club in the past like Roeder and Robson and it didnt work. Mourinho is a proven winner and will get the best out of our so called players. Shearer and Keegan sounds exciting but I cannot see either of them coming back. Mourinho would come if Ashley can convince him .
