Cozza - always the bridesmaid

European England

An unlikely and even uncomfortable image, but I feel an accurate one nonetheless.

Martin Corry has been an excellent servant of English Rugby and the Lions.

In his prime he was one of the best back row forwards in the world.

His bad luck was to peak a little after the Holy Trinity of Dallaglio, Hill and Back and therefore always to play in their shadow, having to settle for playing only when one of them was injured.

In temperament he seems pure Leicester, carved from the same block of granite as Johnno, and again unluckily always suffering by comparison with the great man he followed as captain.

My favourite memories of Cozza in action will be the Lions in Australia in 2001 - surely his richest vein of form, and the ABs game in 2005 when he led the England pack and team who confronted NZ, intimidated them physically, and forced them to concede yellow cards. Okay, another heroic England defeat in the end, but very inspiring.

Thank you Cozza on behalf of England and Lions fans. You're a top bloke and were unlucky not to get the game time your talent deserved. We'll miss you

Woh there, did someone say Dayglo was Jonno's equal as captain? One man captained the Lions twice and defeated the springboks when world champions, lifted the world cup for England, led the defense of a 5 metre scrum against the all blacks with 6 forwards (dayglo got himself binned, thanks for your help) And the other man is a plays like a cart horse and ended his reign as captain after being tricked by a hack, can you see Jonno falling for that?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. The most ridiculous statement I've heard in many a long time. The Bald EGO an equal of Johnson. Never, no even close. Never picked as captain of the Lions never mind twice! Was such a good captain that when he did have the job he tried to impress some judy from the News of the World and was relieved of the captaincy. Johnson was self-effecing, some would say rude and arrogant but if he was forced off the pitch he was not looking for the camera angles from the bench that Dayglo doespeople should not be allowed to blog whilst under the influence. And, and this is the most important bit, the opposition were scared of him. it was McGeechan who first picked him as captain for the Lions so that when the Springboks opened the dressing room door for the toss, it was him they seen. Back to the blog about Corry. A good bloke yes, a good player, yes, world class maybe not. But for inmtegrity and honesty on the pitch he was straight out of the Johnson mould

As a very proud Welshman, I find the comments regarding not only Martin Corry but also Lawrence Dallaglio quite amazing.I watched these two players many times for both club and country and they were a joy too see. Dallaglio at his best was quite simply the best back row forward of his generation, possibly the best English player ever, powerful, fast and dynamic. A great leader both on and of the field. He played every minute of the 2003 world cup because he was the only player England could not do without. Corry became England captain at a difficult time and did nothing wrong, played well, led well and should of retained the captaincy for the last world cup. A great player. So to all you Englishman who find yourselves critising these these two great men shame on you all. As many a Welshman will tell you, players of this quality don't come around to often and it will be a long time before you find two like them, maybe you never will. Both winners. So to Mr Dallaglio and Mr Corry thanks and good luck.

i don't agree with the comments regarding corry's abilties. the only back row ability you can acuse corry of lacking is dynamism. and it is dynamism that separates good back rows from great back rows. so although he wasn't an all time great he was definately the best man for the job for the past 3 or 4 years.

Holy Hooker - take your point but is probably a bit strong to compare playing a game of rugby at Twickers to the fields to Flanders or Normandy beaches

I always thought the best description of Corry was 'workmanlike', which is respectful but hardly dynamic. He was definitely a good, honest player who gave his all for England and anyone who did that over the last year or three was bound to shine. I agree with Wemmett - a great prem player but outstanding international calibre, no.

As a life long england rugby suporter MARTIN CORRY'S, play and attude is what everyone who plays for their country, in what ever sport should aspire to,yes he was not the most talented player ever to play for his country but few can argue that he always gave 200% and played with diginty and humility, just read the poem "IF" for reference!(and no i am not a Leicester RFC Supporter)

Aussietaffy you are quite right.

Dallaglio was, at his height, a truly awesome player. His badly-timed, silly comments after the RWC or his massive ego don't alter that.

As a (now distant) Tigers supporter I watched Corry afew times at Welford Road. Always massive commitment to win. Yes he suffered following Back-Dallaglio-Hill AND being around Andy Robinson's reign (whose still crap IMO) but was one of the few lights in the dark days. Really he hope he goes on to coach or something in the game when he retires. Top man - never any bull from him.

And as for Wales, things looking up (well had to after RWC I guess) but I think the Stay in Wales policy will backfire longterm. But all the best for a good 6Nations. What price Ireland for wooden spoon?
