GB sailors confirmed

comment on the article

Ben Ainslie has beaten Ed Wright and has been confirmed by the BOA as one of nine sailors heading to Beijing with Team GB.

These are the first official Team GB confirmations - you can find the full story here.

Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes have also made the cut, but they weren't in the UK to celebrate as they're competing in the 49er Worlds off Melbourne.

What do you think of the nine sailors confirmed by the BOA for Team GB? Are you pleased to see Ben Ainslie in the team?

Morrison, Rhodes, Paul Goodison and the Yngling crew all won their pre-Olympic test events in China, but will they have what it takes to repeat that performance in the same tough conditions under the Olympic spotlight?

If he had not been chosen it would be a sign that the boa were not interested in medals, he is a class sailor and has proved it by winning his events even when he has other commitments

I went to college with Ben so am very happy for him. He's done really well since then. We need all our best athletes with medal chances at the olympics otherwise we'll struggle!

I agree with fightmonkey - it is ludicrous to even be debating Ainslies place. It isnt an exaggeration to say he is possibly the greatest ever dinghy sailor.

I don't follow sailing much so was wondering if you guys can help.

Didn't last time we do really well at sailing and we had loads of people. This time only 9 people going or am I missing something?

Re: stevenhull35
On the BOA news article on their website Stephen Park (sailing’s Team Leader for Beijing 2008) is quoted as saying that he does "look forward to confirming our nominations in the remaining six classes over the next few months".

Yes, we are that good. In fact sailing and cycling are the two sports that Sir Clive Woodward picked out as exemplars of how to bring talent through to Olympic standard. We have been the top ranked sailing nation in the world for many years and continue to do so.

There are more than 9 people going, a few of the classes haven't had their representatives selected yet but this will be done over the coming months. The reason that they haven't chosen yet is that in most cases there are three or four different choices of genuinely world class competitors to select from. We will go to China with a real chance of medals in just about every Olympic class of boat and board!!!

Perhaps a few other sports would like to look at sailing, as SCW suggested, and learn a bit!

Ben Ainslie, 5th Finn Gold Cup. Possibly the best sailor in the world.
What a win, and what a prospect for a 3rd Olympic Gold Medal.
Well done Ben and the other GB Finn boys.

Mate, you're obviously my size! It's definitely for "grown up" sailors in the large sense!!!

Ainslie is a phenomenon, how could the Kiwis leave him in a rib watching Dean Barker fail miserably to deal with Ed Baird and the Alinghi boys? The whole world (except those wearing black!) knew that they had the wrong driver. Great that he's now going to be involved with Origin! Another Gold medal and a shout at the Americas Cup (if only someone would throw some real money at our campaign!! Branson, Ashley, Lewis all the other British billionaires - where are you??!!!! How about supporting a sport that we are genuinely world class at?!!!)
