Bucknor error spoils the Symonds show

International Tests
comment on the article

I really don't want to be writing an article about umpiring.

I would honestly rather be saluting Andrew Symonds' brilliant century which has given the Australia the initiative after a day of fluctuating fortunes in the second Test against India.

But it would be wrong to comment on his innings, which incidentally featured some of the cleanest hitting against world-class spinners that has been seen in a long while, without mentioning the officials in the middle.

Ishant Sharma, playing his first Test in Australia, was the bowler when the Aussies were in trouble on 193-6.

Symonds, on 30, fenced at a ball wide of off-stump. There was a clear edge, the ball deflecting like outside edges always do, on the way to the wicket-keeper.

As India appealed, Symonds stood his ground as most batsmen do, presumably 99% certain the venerable 61-year-old Jamaican umpire, Steve Bucknor, would send him back to the pavilion.

He did not, and Symonds was released to guide Australia from a precarious situation to a dominant one.

The umpiring errors did not end there. Umpire Mark Benson wrongly gave Ricky Ponting not out caught down the leg-side, and then wrongly gave him out lbw to Harbhajan Singh some time later.

And before he had reached 50, Symonds won a reprieve from Queenslander Bruce Oxenford when a braver TV umpire would have probably adjudged the batsman stumped.

With Australia having reached stumps on 376-6, India fans will be gnashing their teeth with fury.

When will the ICC finally allow technology to take more of a say in umpiring decisions, and importantly restore the good name of the men in the middle?

As a passionate cricket lover, I am very disappointed at the Aussies who are now used to winning at any cost and leaving bad model examples as the leaders of the game. If you are the real kings of the game, I am pretty sure, you would possess the ability to pull off the game with your real skills any time.

Cricket is not all about winning, but about how is it played. Even if Symonds had gone all the way to break Lara's 400, this record will always be tainted in the history with bad sportsmanship. Juxtapose that with the class innings that Laxman played.

Playing unfairly (and winning?) is not what you want to your children to be taught.

I am going to stop following this match and stop wasting my time on something that is fought so dishonorably.

As for Bucknor, he should have retired long time back. His decision errors are all widely known and continues to do so relentlessly, especially against the Indians.

What we need to see is a fair game. Even if you lose, do so with honor and dignity rather than doing so at any cost.

Why not have a performance Table for each Umpire?

As an Indian, I wish some of these fans who posted here stopped getting passionate to the point where they can't make a point without putting down one team or the other. The reality is that the Aussies didn't do anything wrong. How are they cheating when they are playing by the rules? They played the way it was. It is the umpires who really should be getting all the criticism. Where is the ICC now? We don't hear from any of the officials about the officiating. They should be coming out & publicly commenting on it in at least saying that mistakes happen. They should be making promises/pushing towards adapting new technologies to help the game. They are all stuck in their old world mentality about leaving the game as it is instead of modernizing it for the better.

Also, did u guys notice the harshvg guy? Is he nuts or what? I wonder if it is some current Australian player. Hmm.....

You "can't touch" Symmonds. He is the MC Hammer of cricket.

Symmonds protected once again by Bucknor and denies hat-trick for Kumble.

SC

It did look out didn't it?

but Hawkeye showed it was a good decision

Buckner is ok he has just been good not outstanding like Tauffell and Taufell too made mistakes

BUt what astounds me is usually these things even out, this is the first Test in a long time I have seen an Ump decision seriously affect the course of a game

Hiya Pearlaswinger !
Granted the Aussies are the 'best', and are accustomed to being so. So, must they cheat to make doubly sure they win???
