Liverpool For Bentley

Premier League liverpool blackburn rovers

For once Liverpool have the chance this January of signing a top class right sided winger in David Bentley. No disrespect of course to Jermaine Pennant who i think is a fairly decent player but Bentley i feel is a more complete player who scores more goals,is excellent at free kicks and can cross reasonably well with both feet (more so on his right side). There would be a question about his price tag seen as he is English but all Rafa has to do then is offer Momo in exchange plus a fee that i think would range from around 4-7 million.Sissoko is a player greatly suited to Blackburn's style of play and despite the fact I stick up for him and rate him, this would be an offer to good to refuse on Liverpool's behalf. It would also suite Blackburn seen as there is a lump sum of money involved and a player to replace Robbie Savage.Just incase people didn't know,Robbie Savage has been associated with Sunderland AND he is well into his 30's now whereas Momo is a better player and younger. I think Rafa should really take a long, long look at that deal in January, what do you think?

absoloutetruth11...

You forgot to slate carragher and owen for refusing to play for the england SENIOR squad due to wanting a rest....

Just thought i'd point it out ok

Or are they allowed to pick and choose international games due to being/has been pool players???

Owen? Not sure on that one, news to me.
However to my mind if you are fit to play for your country then you should.
Jamie got fed up with McClown picking everyone ahead of him when he was the best CB in the country. Going along to squads game after game and having the likes of Brown (an old Man U mate)& Woodgate playing ahead of you is frustrating.
However Jamie if selected should be playing for England.
For the under 21's Bentley was a key player with a real chance to help England win a tournament and he turned his back on it without ever having had an international career for 10 yrs like Jamie.
I take your point but different situation.

I agree in principle, its a subject matter that will never be totally agreed on.

Rovers fans and neutral fans of Bentley will of course defend him, it was his first full seaon in the PL and he played a HUGE number of games, PL/carling cup/FA cup and a good UEFA run so it's easy to see his point, had he played for the U21 he would only have had around 2 weeks break before reporting for pre-season with rovers.

"If he couldn't get a spot for Arsenal (now you mention Henry & Bergkamp...who are strikers???...weren't the wide players people like Pires)"

Try reading my original post again, as i quite clearly said he was a striker at Arsenal and Sparky changed his position to RM a couple of months after coming to Blackburn...

Oh and i feel i should also add, if Wenger didnt think he was good enough for Arsenal how comes on his first game for Rovers after signing a perminant deal, he scored a hatrick against Manu, becoming the first player to do so in about 50 years?! Its no mean feat...

"if Wenger didn't see enough in him to keep him then in my opinion he is not yet near the level required"

Yes, and yet he left Arsenal in 2005, so he has had 2 years to develop his skills. Besides, he was linked to Manu with Sir Alex saying he was interested not long ago, however he chose to sign a new contract with us till 2011, that takes both loyalty and guts, as if he had moved to United, you can garentee he would of got more money and more chance of medals/trophies.

I for one hope he stays, as he is better then Liverpool and can achieve more personal gains staying at Ewood!

"You mention Pennant yet he has already been one of the best players on the pitch in a CL final"

How on Earth can you judge a player on one game?! You said Bentley was average in the one game earlier and now you say Pennant has been brilliant in one game when in fact the truth is, Bentley has been consistently good for us, whereas Pennant has been nothing but a disappointment, coming from fellow Pool fans!

Get your facts right?!

"He wasn't not fit for England, he wanted to have a rest!!! Hence the huge outcry & subsequent booing of him"

First, the only reason he was boo'd was because, one, the team he plays for, and two, the rubbish that Stuart Pearce came out with to the media! Im not going to get into another long discussion about what happened during the summer and Bentley. All i will say is, Bentley admitted he was low on fitness and was worrying he'd pick up a injury, Pearce ignored this and acted like he hadnt been told, even though he had been by both Bentley and Sparky! This habbit that 'the top 4' fans have in particular with regard to taking the tripe that the media gives out as god given fact is pathetic, and just shows what a problem this countries football industry has both with its teams, staff and fans...

"He's not good enough...there is potential but I think we'll be talking about this potential still in a year or 2"

He is good enough, thats why he was selected for England ahead of Pennant! He has potential to improve more i agree, every footballer has.
Is this potential you talk about, the same potential thats talked about with reference to Pennant?!

"We might as well stick with Pennant who has as much potential and more pace"

Please do! Gladly! laugh
The truth is, Pennants day has been and gone, he has improved all he is going to improve. More pace?? Dont make me laugh! Besides, Bentley has something that Pennant has never had and never will have, the ability to pass a straight long range cross!

We'll as I've said well agree to disagree.
I think he's overated and I think we'll see if he ends up at a big club and performs consistently.
I think like most players in this country we over hype them before they actually achieve anything.
Good luck to him and I'm definitely open to him convincing me just as I am with players like Pennant , Kewell etc who have to the end of season to prove they should stay with us.

The valuation that you lot have of Bentley is way off the mark, £8-10million? Jesus, wish i had what you were smoking. You'd have to triple that and then some to even have Rovers considering letting him go.

Fair point gouldy,

If Darren bent who can't get a game is worth £18m (same as Theirry Henry!!), Bentley must be worth a shout at £20+

I'm not sure I'm making excuses for Pennant. Really I was pointing out that he'd played at the highest level of club football.
He still has an awful lot to do to convince us he should wear the shirt!
However it is the same for players like Bentley who really needs to move to a big club and prove himself before we can say he's right up there at the highest level with players like Ronaldo, Hleb, Rosciky, Giggs, Cole etc
I don't think he has done enough and can't see a big club (now no disrespect to Blackburn but lets be realistic I'm talking top 4 & Champions League teams) coming in for him until we've seen much more.
