Warne Attacks 'Arrogant' Aussies

Australia
comment on the article

Austrailian cricket legend Shane Warne has launched a remarkable attack on the Australian game and its admins.

Warne accused the people involved in Australian cricket of a "worrying arrogance" and said they would not always be the world's number one team.

"Administrators, ex-players and former coaches have got to stop their arrogant mindset that Australia is so much better than everyone else," said Warne.

"We are number one at present, but other countries will catch up soon."

He told Sydney's Daily Telegraph: "The other countries will unearth someone, that's just the cycle."

Warne also tore into John Buchanan, the former Australia coach who presided over 25 Test series wins in a seven-year reign.

The Hampshire captain had criticised Buchanan's unorthodox methods in 2006 when he organised a pre-Ashes training camp.

"Everything that I have read that he (Buchanan) says, is absoloute nonsense. He is living in pixieland," said Warne.

"It just shows what us players had to put up with John Buchanan. We had to listen to his verbal diarrhoea all the time.

"He is just a goose and has no idea and lacks common sense."

However Australia vice-captain Adam Gilchrist defended Buchanan and the Australia set-up.

"Everyone knows that Warney and John have never seen eye to eye so I don't think we've found out anything new there," said Gilchrist.

"Warney's got a strong opinion on a lot of things and as we all know he's one of the greatest players that's ever been. Whatever is his opinion is his opinion and it doesn't necessarily reflect the whole team.

"I don't believe that the team's arrogant and I certainly don't believe that the administration's arrogant at all."

Australia are set to host India in a Test series that starts next week and Warne, who retired last year, says the visitors should not be written off.

He claims "Sachin (Tendulkar) is the best batsman I have played either with or against" and described India captain Anil Kumble as one of the most competitive players going around.

Warne took 708 Test wickets in his glittering international career, which ended after the 2006/07 Ashes.

His record for most test wickets was recently overtaken by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan in the 1-0 series win over England

Warnie can say what he likes. Gilly can too, and so can Chapelli and Bux and anybody who pleases, if you are a master of your chosen trade. Because this is how we like it in Australia. Any addition to the summer craziness is expected, welcomed, delighted in, and appreciated.

there are no gentlemen in australia (we all love our "girls"). Warnie seems genuine enough to teach youngsters, i guess the arrogance will die down in a few years. at the present stage spinners in australia deserve all the help they can get, think about cameron white, cullen bailey, dan cullen. they dont look very promising at all.

from recent pura cup matches, a crop of pace bowlers have emerged like noffke, hilfy etc. all look international material. the only exception to this trend is nathan hauritz. wonder why they didn't give him another chance.

Australia must have felt void after Shane's departure to make him a specialist spinning trainer---and taking todays Kumble's performance they were right on target to unearth quality spinners in Oz.India should take lead to appoint batting bowling and fielding coaches to strenghten the team's performance.Lets hope our batsman will not let us down in Melbourne.

Can we just enjoy a good contest and the cricket?

If these two teams play hard excellent cricket with advantage changing hands the cricket is the winner and we need not have to go overboard in either praise or condemnation of teams

We just lay back and enjoy it as cricket will always give twists and turns no novelist can invent!

rshome I agree we Australians are too arrogant sometimes (and definitely worse than 10-15 years ago) but I think it's a bit over the top to say there are no Australian gentlemen.

Have you never seen an interview with Adam Gilchrist?!

That bloke is more of a gentlemen than anyone that's ever played the game, in or out of Australia. Well-spoken, polite, respectful, and a damned nice guy. You've obviously never heard him speak.

And blokes like Pat Rafter would also go down as one of the most down-to-earth sportsman to have ever lived. Never heard an arrogant word come out of his mouth.

But then you get people like Leyton Hewitt who spoil the image that Rafter created, and Ponting etc that spoil the image that Gilchrist creates etc

So yes the average Aussie is more arrogant these days, but don't label the whole country based on the bad behaviour of a few.

hi bondibum

being an aussie guy, during my time as an antipodean last year and throughout the majority of this year, i learned there were two kinds of australians: ones that hung out at the walkabout and made only aussie friends, and ones that worked damned hard and whenever a bank holiday came it was nice to enjoy fjord hopping out there in the scandanavian islands

i was one that fell in the second category, ashame that things did not work out for me there

but in my time over there i learned to pull my resources that i wasnt the typical aussie guy and i could actually make friends with people from other cultures, and some of them dont even speak english as their first language

during my time in rome i spent all day with a girl from brazil and she spoke next to no english. i had a great time in turkey, especially in the south coast where the natives were friendly and spoke no english

still the point im getting at is, i reckon australians are a little caught up in their own little world too much, thinking what we have is bigger than everything else. especially when you leave cities like sydney and melbourne, the tolerant society tends to melt away. when you go to a city like perth it becomes scary when players from the local australian football club team claims ownership of the town

we are located all the way down there. only new zealand is a country which is more far flung away than us.

the point of this post is to be worldly. much like shane warne. i often thought he didnt have much of a brain for some of the stuff he committed but now im glad he played for us now
