Manucho Goncalves signs with United

Premier League Manchester United

Manucho Goncalves, the Angolan striker, 24, on trial at United for the past 3 weeks has signed with United under a 3 year contract subject to work permit approval.

The player is the leading scorer in the Angolan top division for the past two seasons with 16 goals in 2007 and 15 from the season before. He has 10 international appearances, scoring 2 goals.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuch...

Manucho does not have the required number of international caps and would have to apply for special dispensation, like Anderson, failing which he would go on loan, presumably to Portugal, while he accumulates the required number of caps. He is included in the Angolan squad for the coming ANC and has already 1 international goal from the qualifiers.

He will only be available in February or earlier, depending on the national team's performance in that tournament and work permit issues.

Well Didier Drogba was plucked up late totally out of obscurity and if Goncalves can be anything like Drogba well we really would be on a winner

Yeah sounds like a risk.
Could be buzzin, but could be a complete and utter flop. Hope he gets the work permit.

Yeah, sounds very similar to Solskjaer, but anyone remember a certain Ian Wright...

He might be a WC striker in the making.

Wasn't he the one Angolan player that did ok against Portugal in the world cup?

Anyway just trust SAF, he obviously sees something in the guy. We need another striker (out and out Van Nistelrooy type striker) in the squad cos Saha isn't enough.

I'm sure the lesser leagues are not scouted as much, probably more difficult (and potentially dangerous) to scout certain African leagues. Top scouts would be looking in South American leagues mainly, potentially those in Eastern Europe.

I don't see how this can be classified as a risk. not much, if any money has been spent, and he is young only aged 24. If things don't work out he will just move on. A risk would be splashing out 25 million + on Berbatov. At the end of last season i would have probably agreed, but looking at his attitude now, not thanks.

He's 6'2" and is fast. That's all I know about this guy other than the standard details given buy SAF.
He may not end up being as great an African striker as Droggie but do we really need that great a striker when we have Ronaldo, Tevez, and Rooney now in such good goal nick? Sure we have a formiddable goal difference mostly due to our phenomenal defence, however goals win games and I feel we have what it takes now. I '99 we had Yorke, Cole, Teddy, n Ole. None of which I felt were world-class strikers whatsoever. Yet what they did together was absolutely Supremo-class! I feel that the partnerships that were built between Van Nistelrooy and Rooney, and such always involved one superstar. Our team at the moment as not just one, but eleven!
People say wee need youngsters?
Pique, Dong, Nani, Anderson, Campbell, Simpson, Foster!, just to name a few.
United will most definitely be world-class for a long time. Bring it on Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and the like!

I think they just bought him because his name sounds like Man U

Seriously though, I think this could be a good buy, sounds like a promising player, not world class but you've already got a world class pairing up front with many years left in them. He'll be a good back up because he doesnt come with the ego of players like Berbatov.
