Crouch's red card: What Peter thinks

Carling Cup Premier League Premiership Liverpool Chelsea

"Mikel came in with his studs up and that was in the back of my mind," said Crouch. "Then I thought there was another foul in there and obviously I've lost my head.

"There are no excuses for the tackle I made but if the referee had pulled the foul up when he should have done it wouldn't have happened.

"A lot was going their way and I think frustration got the better of me. You give and take with referees and sometimes the decisions go for you and sometimes they don't so you can't always blame them."

The sending off proved to be one of the defining moments of the match and while Crouch has no complaints about the referees decision, he feels it may have been a different story had it been a challenge on someone with a less theatrical nature.

"What I'm thinking is if you go in on Frank Lampard or John Terry would they roll around like Obi Mikel did? I don't think they would have done," continued Crouch.

"Would someone like Carra have gone down like that? I think it's safe to say that he wouldn't.

"Foreign players have brought a lot to our game but that's something you don't want to see. I didn't catch him but he's gone down like he's been shot.

"It's frustrating because I thought we played okay as a team and obviously it was always going to be difficult from the moment I was sent off."

Despite nine changes from the side that faced Manchester United on Sunday, Rafael Benitez's men more than matched the hosts throughout an end-to-end encounter, and Crouch feels the Reds were in with a real chance of progressing into the last four until a fortunate goal from Frank Lampard was followed minutes later by his dismissal.

"Credit to Lamps," he said. "He's hit a shot which took a deflection and went in but it was really unfortunate for us.

"We certainly had chances and I thought we did well at times and it looked like we could go on and win the game.

"It was always going to be difficult away from home against Chelsea but we always thought that we were in the game and could have nicked it, but after the sending off it was always going to be difficult from then on."

DillipCrisby,
"I think this is ridiculous. Every squad selection is a manager's decision. When Liverpool lost to Reading, Benitez took off key match-winners, but I'm sure he takes the Premiership with alot of seriousness. But upcoming games forced him to take out key players."
-----------------------------------------
If he is taking Premiership with a lot of seriousness he wouldnt have taken the key players then.
Liverpool would have been out of Champs league if they had lost to Marseille away .. so he was taking that game seriously than the one against Reading .. thats something which he could have avoided that if he had won the easier matches at home .. he just put himself in jeopardy period.

I may have missed something but I didn't hear Rafa defending Crouch's tackle, he gave reasons why he thought PC 'lost his head', therefore admitting he deserved to go. Crouch himself has come out and admitted he was frustrated as he felt he was getting no protection, and he 'lost it' and was deservedly sent off.
Being and LFC fan people will say I am bound to say this, but I for one think its refreshing for a manager and player to come out and admit it was a red card. Usually we get constant bleeting by managers, proclaiming their man was unlucky to be sent off. Instead they should be concentrating on the mistakes made by their players on the pitch.

But both have come out and tried to shift the blame. They should both say that its a red card, no excuses or say nothing. Crouch has come out and said that it was the playacting that got him sent off not the tackle, which is absolute cack.

It was a red card for a silly tackle wheather there was contact or not, but it should have been a free kick and a yellow to Mikel for sticking his studs in crouch just before the send off.

Fully deserved red card for Crouch !!! he was acting like an spoilt child with regards to his poor play all season and not being able to get a good run in the side. His "challenge" was nothing other than that of an animal, a disgrace !!! As for Rafa yet another moan too far for his failures this season, and yet another empty trophy room awaits !!!

SPIN SPIN SPIN! Why do Liverpool always think that a results which didn't go their way against Chelsea can be changed by crying to their busom budies in The Sun newspaper.

I am a Spurs supporter so have an unswayed opinion. I like Crouch because he has shown some honesty. Also, what annoys me more than silly challenges is absolute pansies rolling around on the floor like spoilt brats. Sod the fact that it was a red card challenge, Mikel should have been sent off for bringing the game into disrepute.
The laws of the game baffle me!!!

I think the ref was reaching for the card before Mikel "play-acted", so it could not have been mikel who got Crouch sent off. I do agree with Crouch that the ref should have awarded a foul for Mikel's rather agressive attempt to win the ball back.

I think too, the Liverpool man should avoid the old and tired BS about English players being saints while foreign stars are all cheats. Such "holier-than-thou", perfect self-image gives England internationals the wrong kind of confidence.
