BOBBYS THE MAN

Just finished watching the BBC Sports personality thing, what a reception of respect and love for Bobby Robson, and what a well earned award he recieved. As a long time fan I still cherish his years at ITFC as it appears does Bobby himself from his comments tonight. And lo and behold our main men Sheepy and Jim M were on the stage to pay their dues to him.

It brought to mind a game in the League Cup when I stood in the North stand, we were being done by one G.Best (never heard of him after that!) and the crowd started the Robson out chant. Allegedly the chairman told Bobby to ignore them and probably gave him a glass of white wine. Sure we were not very good but he was building something, a few months later Allan Hunter came to Town and from there we never looked back. Mick Hill was replaced by Rod Belfitt, Hunter replaced Bobby Bell, Jefferson improved out of recognition the team got better and better. But we didn't win anything for years. Did enough to avoid relegation that's all. But then came top 4 finishes Europe, trophies, and watching the best team in Europe in 1981.

Sure we are terrible away, we are a league lower but there are similarities between that situation and the one Jim finds himself in now. He is building a team now, with the added option of adding to it in January. There will be setbacks, like the away form but like Bobby R I'm sure Jim will eventually get it right. I don't agree with all he's done, far from it but like Robson did he too will learn from his errors and build as bigger and better. How long it takes is another question.

It brought a lump to my throat watching Bobby Robson as much for him personally as for the part our club played in his life. Who is to say Jimbo wont be held in equal respect one day.

As a newcastle fan it bought me to tears. A fantastic servant, representative and face for english football over the last 50 years. An incredible man who constantly shows determination, defiance against illness and passion for the game we all love. A great manager(look what he did with Ipswich) and a great player.
Thoroughly deserved and an astounding reception. Sir Bobby Robbson is just INCREDIBLE.

@ MidosNoggin

It's a bit silly to suggest Sir Bobby for England. The man is obviously suffering with medical problems and struggles to get about. Although, I'm sure todays players could do with some motivational words from a respected figure in football.

I think that is the problem. These players no longer have England managers who they look up to and respect for their knowledge and contribution to football. There lies the problem.

Well done to Sir Bobby. Fully deserved!

That’s a little unfair branyzees. Firstly we have only ever got to the semi's of the Euro's once and that was at home. Robson did no better or worse than most of England managers in the Euro's.

Secondly, in 1988 we were in a group that contained the eventual finalists (The famous Holland side and the USSR) - will anybody in future years say Marco Van Basten is a bad coach should he go on to win championships in European leagues, UEFA Cups, FA's Cups, Copa Del Rey's etc...should France and Italy knock out Holland next summer??!!!

Thirdly, look what he did in World Cups; in 1990 our best finish since 1966 in a semi-final that even Franz Beckanbeur says we were unlucky not to win and a quarter final in 1986 that we were cheated out of by the "Hand of God".

Fourthly, how many English managers have done what he did with the likes of Ipswich (all due respect to them), winning FA Cups and UEFA Cups? How many English managers have gone to the continent to challenge themselves in a different type of football, and winning league championships, domestic and European cups? Most stay at home.

Finally, how can you say people forget “bad times so easily” – we would slate *every* single manager if we hammered them for periods of *relative* failure. What about Sir Alex’s first 3 years at united when the fans were sick and were chanting for him to get sacked. Or our own world cup winner, Sir Alf Ramsey, who did worse than Robson in 1988 when in 1974 did “a McClaren” and failed to qualify us. Should we forget his success and focus on this?! Of course not. He, Sir Alex and Sir Bobby deserve all they get for their sustained success.

When you add his playing career to this, his length of service and his enthusiasm and commitment to the game it is amazing he hasn't been honoured sooner!

It brought a lump to my throat to see sir bob limp up to the stage.
The man is a living legend and has had many personal battles to overcome and yet still has that twinkle in his eyes.
I have very good memories of my father taking me to watch Robsons Ipswich back in the days when i was a young boy.
The chants of "Bobby Robsons blue and white army" still stick in my mind each time i walk past his statue at portman road on match days.

I honestly think that its the last time we will see sir bob on tv. The poor man looked very ill.
He still remains president of our club to this day.

God Bless you Bob!!

Bobby Robson was a great manager and is a true gent of the old school. After being sacked as a rookie manager at Fulham he achieved sustained success over 30 odd years in the UK and abroard and at both club and international levels. What a great guy. All the best me old son from this Ipswich fan downunder.

I just wanted to say it's great to see these comments about Sir Bobby. Well done and well said pr8rjc. I've only met the man once but it remains a highlight of my life.

Honesty, integrity, dignity, guts, honour, and he wasn't half bad as a manager. His frequent malapropisms only endeared himself further to me. What a man.

It broke my heart to see him so frail, but he still sparkled and got the reception he deserved. Elsie looked so proud. The whole thing was very well done and very moving.

The clip is on youtube if you missed it or want to see it again.

At the Sports personality of the year awards in 2047, which British manager will be able to receive such an award and be able to look back on a career for England, manage several English clubs with success and also the National team?
