Fully deserved Joe for both you and your father. People know when they see quality and you certainly are, it was a long time coming. Keep your head up Ricky ! Your pride and honour seem to have taken more damage than your body but you let no one down. You were in against a fighter who is simply awesome and you had the guts to go up a weight to fight him. The laws of nature simply took over and the brilliant bigger guy beat the brilliant smaller guy. Take 6 months off and then get your light-welterweight titles back.

Team of the year has to be Leeds United 15 points down at the start of the season 5th at the time of the awards 2 points begind the leaders. Side note i am slightly biased as im a Leeds fan.

p.s well done Joe and Enzo fully deserved i just hope Joe gets the chance to beat the very un pc Hopkins was anyone else slighlty offended with his racist comments? "no white guys gonna beat me? if that was the otherway round i could see a far few justified complaints what a stange world we live in.

Rob H - I'm an Essex Seasider not a Sussex one, and one of those Liam Brady will remember from a few years back when Canvey Island cost him his job, so sorry, not a "fellow" in that respect - probably quite the opposite.

Being p*ssed off that he didn't get it last year is no excuse for what he said to this year's potential voters. If you're going to talk to your public then using the brain and exercising diplomacy is essential - keep the anger and the hissy fits for the ring - there's no denying he's at his best there.

It's nice to see Joe finally getting recognised, even if it has come a year late. Zara Phillips, really???

That wasn't a racist comment it was an inaccurate comment. JC is going to knock BH's block off. And then BH will look even more stupid for making that comment in the first place.

I think the point was that Joe hasn't fought any of the premier men around the middleweight scene in his era, which in all fairness, he hasn't. Lacy and Kessler can't be placed in the same league as Roy Jones Jr, Hopkins, Taylor and Tarver were at a few years back.

I think he deserved the award because ten years as a champion is impressive.

Think some of the abuse ceej is getting is a bit unfair though, he does have a point.

The problem that Joe has now is that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he goes and beats Hopkins it'll be because Hopkins is an old man, but if he doesn't go to America and fight these guys he'll only get more criticism.

A sizeable portion of the blame for this must go to Frank Warren who has a history of promoting sometimes uninspiring fights. Hatton and Haye aren't with him and Hatton has just faced the p4p champion and Haye got the two main belts in his division.

In saying that though, I thoroughly enjoyed the Kessler fight and think that Joe was a worthy winner of the award this year.

Bristoljacksa1 is spot on - he clearly knows his boxing. The truth is that it is easier to stay a champion for 10 years if you don't fight the best of the rest until you are sure that you can beat them. Holding one of the minor belts for a long time just doesn't cut it.

Calzaghe is a fine boxer but I am not convinced that he is/was better than Eubank in his prime.

Hatton deserves huge respect for going up against Mayweather. Let's hope that he can reclaim the light-welterwight crown.

Yes, the right person won. Well done, indeed, Joe!
I've never been on a boxing post before. How refreshing to see a majority of fans who are articulate, intelligent, knowledgeable and above all, know where the shift and comma keys are and able to write English to a higher level than moronic phonetextspeak.

Firstly, good article. I have to comment on those who seem to berate the career of Joe, saying that he has not been in the ring with the best. Absolute rubbish! When Joe moves upto Light Heavyweight and takes out Hopkins, Kesslar is my bet to take over the Super Middleweight devision and the Lacey fight cannot be disregarded. In terms of Joe not fighting the Jones Jnrs, the Taylors and the Tarvers, through years of hard work and dedication to the sport Joe has managed to put himself in a position where THEY will now need to chase HIM to be the best. I have to agree with the comment on Frank Warren though, a reflection of this being the Khan fight at the weekend! Joe is now in that previlaged position though where he can make the fights he wants rather then the nonsense that Warren puts forward. Manfredo, seriously?

In terms of Ricky, a well fought fight but the task was just too big - and Cortez didn't help anything either! PBF showed why he is the best by esentially making light work of someone with Rickys callibur. Ricky should stick to Light Welter and I mean no disrespect by that. He took a huge gamble stepping up to fight Money Mayweather and has lost no respect in doing so but I think if he stays a devision down he can cement his place as one of the best.

Overall, a great year for british boxing with deserved champions and deserved award winners.

P.S. - Enzo should drop Warren and Haye to rule the heavyweight devision!!!

Agreed. Mayweather showed all his class and didn't have a scratch on him at the end. He also showed his class after the fight with his praise of Hatton, I hate bad winners and he certainly wasn't that.

Step too far for the guy, but yes, he can't be criticised for wanting to fight the best and he shouldn't be criticised in defeat, he gave it his best shot.

I'd love to see him fight Cotto, but I think Cotto's interests lie in the Welterweight division.

Back to the point about Joe, I hope he gets his fight against Hopkins, but I don't think it will silence anyone. As I said, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

What you aren't taking into account is that Jones Jr, Hopkins etc are all older than Joe and they are superstars. Hopkins held his belt for as long as Joe has and Jones Jr is ranked in the top ten p4p post war on this very site, and that's for a reason. They don't need to chase anyone to prove their greatness, Joe needs them more than they need him.

If Joe wanted those fights it should have been years ago, now he will get hardly any praise if he goes and beats them because they're old men. Mind you, we don't know if he wanted them, if Warren didn't want them or whatever, so I'm not going to criticise him for it.

As I have said, Joe throughly deserved the award for beating a good champion in Kessler, but Lacy was overhyped and Robin Reid almost upset him a few years back if you remember. I think people tend to look at Joe through rose-tinted spectacles a tad, but you can't knock what he's done, ten years as a champion at any level is impressive.
