Ben Cohen signs with Brive

England

Ben Cohen, World cup winner and England's third highest try scorer has joined Brive who are currently at the bottom of France's Top 14.

Cohen left Northampton Saints who he had been with for all of his playing career after the club was relegated and he was not made captain. New Zealand's Bruce Reihana was made captain and Cohen bought himself out of his contract.

Cohen was then linked with Leicester Tigers but that fell through because of a salary cap.

Cohen was again linked with Leicester last week and announced ahead of the the Barbarians match that he was close to signing a deal.
"I'm sorting out a club now," said Cohen.

"I hope to be playing within the next few weeks - before the new year.

"There is nothing signed and sealed. I've had plenty of offers and I weighed up my options. But I've decided on the club it will be.

What threw everyone off the Brive trail was when Cohen who lives in Northamptonshire said he was not moving house.

"We're just crossing Ts and dotting the Is. I won't be moving house." he said.

Brive's president Patrick Sébastien however announced last night that Cohen had signed for Brive until July 2009.

Ben is a brillaint winger and alot of people posting on this thread just don't appear to understand that a winger is only as good as the centres inside him.

I believe that England would have won the rugby world cup if Ben Cohen had been on the wing, because experience is worth its weight in gold. its helped us beat the aussues, it helped us beat the french in their own back yard! for a winger, Cohen's work rate and ball carrying is the best in the world! it would have hurt SA in the final, I would have loved to see him run at kids like francois styne and JP peiterson for 80 minutes! it would have been game over and back to back RWC's for England!

I wish him all the best with Brive. I expect him to forget about all the bitter and twisted types who are only too keen to put the boot into a former world champion and enjoy life in france and get back to enjoying rugby for all the right reasons. He's a English sporting hero and as good a man as any of us who's posted on this thread probably better becasue he's gone out and done it for real and he'll always have my respect for what he's done while wearing the white jersey of England!

mysteriousblablabla: Sorry chap, but that was a comment in pretty bad taste.

Ben had been a great servant to the Saints, however it was the right time for him to move on. The confidence wasn't there, or maybe it was the hunger had gone. A new challenge will do him good, although I get the feeling when he bought himself out of his contract, he had no intention of moving to the bottom club in France.

Wish him all the best though.

Cohen is a legend in his own mind.
Petulant little man, had to leave because he wasn't made captain.

Ben Cohen was (and I stress the was) at one time, one of the deadliest finishers in World Rugby. However for those of us who don't live in the past, his performances were already on the wane before RWC2003.

At RWC2003 he was at best, the fourth best winger in English Rugby!! Cueto, Hanley, Robinson and Lewsey were all in better form than Cohen had been in the preceding season, however as we all know Sir Clive did not pick on form, he went with his tried and battle-hardened selections.

Cohen has always suspect in defence, he can make a good tackle, but his defensive positioning is still suspect after all these years playing at the highest level!!!

To be honest, the Saints and England have probably had the best of Cohen's years and they are now moving forward with younger, sharper, hungrier and more elusive wingers.

Never thought Old Scouts would move from their ground at the bottom of the Rushmere Road, however it looks like they are too good for Northampton (Saints) and will relocate to France instead!!

Sorry 4theCaptain, the reason for Cohen going had nothing whatsover to do with the captaincy (this was just a tactic to save face). The real reason is personal to Ben. If you found out the truth then I suspect you would have a great deal of sympathy for him. Don't be too quick to judge!

If he doesn't get picked one weekend, will he throw his dolly out again.
He's despicable and no club should have employed him. The best place for cry baby Ben is in the wilderness.

zl9t9n and Clockworkscot.

I think you have missed the point of my comment. I am not saying Cohen should have been signed by Tigers as I am not sure we need him.

The point I was making was we were prevented from signing him by the Salary cap for money he earned as a loyalty bonus from his previous club. Then we get criticised on these boards for signing overseas players!

Makes me laugh how people can even suggest that the likes of Sackey,Cueto, and whatever any other no marks went to the world cup Ben Cohen would have done a better job than any of them and as far as throwing his toy's out the pram dont speak about things you know nothing about as it makes you look a little silly?? agghh thats better. Merry christmas.
