Celtic Cup...

International

What do the rest of you Celts think about this proposed Celtic Cup, due to start in 2009?
As a Welshman, i'm quite looking forward to it. Perhaps it will push the Millennium Stadium attendance above 30,000(!), i think the matches will be hard-fought, intense affairs and at least it gives us a realistic opportunity to win a trophy!

"If you hold it during the off season, all the top players will be knackered and burnt out from a long hard season of domestic competition. And without proper rest and recuperation over the summer they'll all be injured by the time the new season starts."

THIS IS RIDICULOUS

1. IT'S ONLY CALLED THE CELTIC CUP BECAUSE ENGLAND DIDN'T WANT TO ENTER IT. HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO STUPID!!!!

people on here actually think the bitter, resentful FA's of each of the four respective countries involved in this tournament all collaborated to call it the celtic cup because they didn't want england in it ( despite the massive windfall they would recieve from an engllish presence) just so they could spite the old enemy. What a bunch of di**heads

You're having a laugh, aren't you? You say the Celtic nations are 'losers', so England are winners, right? Do you remember what happened last Wednesday night? And don't think you're going to stroll into the next World Cup finals either.
Had Scotland been in your group, they would have qualified.
England ought to participate in the new home championship for one simple reason: you'll have a chance to win some silverware.

-----------------------------------------------

On the basis that you haven't qualified for a tournament in 10 years, and when you have qualified, you have never got out of your group, this is a load of balls. You lost 4 games in a group, like us you didn't deserve to qualify from a group.

You actually had more chance with Italy and France in your group. It's no secret that Scotland players, fans, media just get up for the glamour games. Put you in a group with Croatia, Russia etc, and no-one gives toss, and you lose 5!

You bottled it big style

The home internationals were originally the "big" tournament and the home nations did not take part in first two world cups , preferring the "british" style of play ! letting jonny foreigner get on with it ......
now none of us can qualify , lets go back to the good old days !!!!
come on england , wake up , you are not as good as greece, croatia or romania . you need some decent practice !

ceej1979 - I can't think of a bigger waste of time. Committing every other summer to playing a load of 2nd, 3rd, 4th seed teams in a pointless league system.

Thats a belter of a comment lmao YOU were 2nd seeds aswell ok. Typical of the "we r better because we r english brigade"

I think this would be pretty good practice for the world cup qualifiers - a mix of useful, and lesser teams, just like a typical world cup group, with something to play for rather than meaningless friendlies. Can't understand why England doesn't want to take part...

"England fans really couldn't give a t*ss about playing the home nations."

Ha ha ha! Yeah, I expect that's why there were so many empty seats at the last competitive games England played against Scotland, Wales and N Ireland, and why the atmosphere at those six games (and the two between Wales and N Ireland) was so tame and boring.

You really are a prize buffoon.

ceej showing his face again.

So ceej you still going to Austria Switzerland next year?

Nah, didn't think so.

You must have been spewing. Seeing your team so spectacularly bottle it. No wonder you didn't have the front to come on these forums for a week.

Picture the scene - at home only needing a draw against a team from a nation of 4.5million people and what do you get, total embarrassing capitulation.

Carson was good though eh!? So the three top english keepers are in fact not keepers at all. They are clowns, pure and simple.

"But no one has said yet that this will add games to the calendar? maybe it can be played in place of some of those amazingly important friendlies that we all currently play. What would have been better preparation for the croatia game do you think a) a friendly in austria, or b) Scotland at Wembley?"

So you're saying they should have played the entire Celtic tournament in November right before a must-win Euro qualifier? Nope that won't add games to the calendar at all. I'm sure had Michael Owen been playing against Scotland rather than Austria he wouldn't have sustained his injury. I mean, it's not like England-Scotland matches are ever fierce or combative is it.

"and there was me thinking this debate had been sparked by the announcement of an agreement between Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland to play a Celtic Cup, something they had suggested they were discussing some months back. or did the BBC completely make this article up?"

Sure Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Republic of Ireland have been discussing this for months but it's only since last Wednesday when England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 that there's been any mention in the press of England partaking in this. The press have got nothing to write about so the mentality is "let's stir the debate on England taking part in the Celtic Cup and generate some interest" And it's worked because check it out, we're all here talking about it!

Well it's widely excepted that one of the reasons Greece won it last time around was because all the top players from the other countries were knackered or injured after heavy domestic seasons.

And yeah, the fact that the British players will have the summer off to rest and recuperate will certainly benefit their clubs.
