England Anthem

Premier League Tottenham Hotspur
comment on the article

On another thread the question of what to sing at England games arose. "Football's coming home" was (is) a great song but the national anthem does nothing to stir up the patriotism of the fans or the passion of the players. It is embarrassing to watch the players mumbling through it as they don't know the words.

Other countries have better anthems and one of the best is (sorry) La Marseillase for the French. Even the Kraut one is better than ours.

Land of Hope and Glory (Pomp & Circumstance) by Sir Edward Elgar is an excellent candidate. The composer himself mentioned the need to stir the soul. Rule Britannia is another.

With comedy in mind, "Things can only get better" is a possibility (but Labour used it and things got worse). Against Macedonia "I'm Jake the Peg" seemed appropriate.

Let's have your suggestions: both serious and fun ones.

The Italian and the French anthems are the best.

As for England, there are no suitable alternatives to God Save the Queen.

Rule Britannia should be avoided at all costs.

It's got to be Jerusalem. Can't have Land of Hope and Glory, it's too connected to the Tories and the last night of the proms. Hardly any good for a 'working man's" game!

What about "im gonna knock you out"? Let me tell you.. if the fans were half as passionate about EVERY game the way the Northern Ireland faithful were in singing the national antemn then this issue wouldn't even be debated.. The players should know the anthem (thats emabarrassing to see them mumble through it) but I'd rather see the guys focused on the game than worry about singing a song!!

The crowd should be the ones to show passion in their nationality and let the players fell they are playing for their country...

'Stick you' by Daphne and Celeste

Or 'I vow to thee my country'. Gets used in loads of adverts to get the blood pumping.

I'd like to see the whole team line up and sing and dance to the YMCA. I can just picture Stevie G losing himself in the moment and really getting into it lol.

On a serious note, "Football's Coming Home" is a quality song, and is really links football and England. There's no better sound than the wembly croud singing their hearts out to that.
