The position of Lions Tour Manager has always been a figurehead position given to a bonafide Lions Legend, whose task is mostly to provide a recognisable link between the Lions and the Union hosting the tour.

Just look at the last three - Fran Cotton, Donal Lenihan and Bill Beaumont. Those guys certainly qualify as legends and would get into an international side now.

As a man of great integrity, passion and honesty, Gerald Davies is perfect for the role of Tour Manager, he will be treated with the utmost respect by the South Africans and he should get our respect too based on what he has achieved in the game.

Sunday74 - does the number refer to your IQ?

You don't say why you think Gerald Davies is a bad choice, apart from saying he's too old.

Which rather points to the fact that his age is your entire arguement for not picking him as tour manager, meaning you really must be a simpleton.

Of the three other names you mentioned, none of them really have experience of the administration required within the game, so I can't say you're doing much thinking on that count either.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but it is the ultimate accolade to be picked for the British and Irish Lions.

It may be an anachronism in this 'biff baff bosh' professional rugby era, but the amateur ethos that remains is what makes rugby union so special.

The appointment of the coach should not be viewed as a trial run for future England, Irish and other home nations coaching appointments. It is, and should be treated as, a level above the home nations.

My views? At the moment, too early to say, but Ian McGeechan has two Lions series wins under his belt, so that must be taken into consideration. Mike Ruddock and Brian Ashton as assistants?

Perhaps as a journo he will know how to handle the press and therefore good for the job. Just keep him away from the playing side as far too out of touch.

Gerald Davies is a good choice. He will command the respect that is needed.

As for the coach, give Frank Haddon a chance to show what he can do with the best players. He has done wonders with the scottish team and would bring out the best in the lions for sure.

EOS, sorry mate but the world cup proved a few things i'd rather not say. Geeks (legend) go along and enjoy the matches... you've done your bit..

Ask anyone who knows anything about rugby who would be an automatic choice in their team and one name would be TRG Davies. By common consent one of the greatest wings of all time and I say that as an Englishman. I am sure many international players of today wish they had 10% of his ability and vision.
