England & McLaren

Euro 2008 England

comment on the article

As an Irishman who has witnessed yet another futile qualification campaign and waved goodbye to another manager my interest in Euro 2008 will be passive to say the least.

However, I was wondering about the English fans out their. Obviously, Isreal have given England an excellent chance now to qualify for the tournament. But having read a lot of articles about how McClaren should go, and very few in favour of him staying, what do you think about the situation with him now?

Are their any fans who feel like this is just prolonging a departure that needs to happen, or are you just happy that the course of qualification is now safely in your own hands?

Personally, and this is coming from a man who's nation's media slaughtered Steve Staunton into him losing his job (And to be honest, it had to happen), do you think McClaren can learn from the campaign and change things for Euro 2008?

We will see if Man City are a top club when april comes around.

I have to agree with some comments, to be honest all that matters at this stage is to qualify, during a qualifing campaign everyteam will struggle at some point no matter who they are, whats important are the results at the end, if we qualify then the jobs done.

I wouldnt care if England were the worst I would still say COME ON ENGLAND, and more people should do the same.

COME ON ENGLAND

Brian Barwick last August said " Steve is the right man for the job ". So, as his judgement has been proved to be soooooo wrong, we'll expect Brian Barwick's resignation then? No? There's a shock.

Whats more, he's overwieght and uncharasmatic and I don't like his face smiley

I have been a quiet supporter of England all my life and I have seen some terrible managerial blunders - and some truly inspiring moments that we will never forget - but at the end of the day, England have failed to qualify for ANOTHER tournament...

When Graham Taylor failed to qualify for USA 94, he was sacked. Whether that was the right decision or not is not up for discussion because it is past. But a precedent was set and after last nights debacle, McClaren had to go.

Today, people have been reporting that Capello is interested in the job, and the bookies have Mourinho and O'Neill in as favourites...

But what is wrong with English managers? What is wrong with Peter Taylor, Sam Allardyce, Paul Jewell? Even giving Alan Shearer a chance might prove fruitful!

Or how about one of these pundits who think they know everything... Alan bleedin' Hanson always has something to say - give the job to him.

Whatever the solution, history cannot be changed, and there is really only one person to be blamed for the teams failure...the man who decided to put a rookie goalkeeper between the posts on the most important night in English Football for the last decade...

Don't blame Carson, blame "Spanner" McClaren for screwing up the works...

McLaren was essentially chosen purely because he was English, which was a quality that was so precious to large parts of the English media and press. They all hated Sven saying his team played passionless football, but many English supporters would accept that stlye of play today if it meant qualification.Put your prejudices aside and accept that the best man for the job at this moment in time will probably have to be a foreigner, whom i am sure will be able to mould Englands many talented players into a worldclass side.

why was Marko Babic left on the bench he is a solid player should have been on from the start.he would have ended the game before the end of the first half. (BvB supporter)

I am not the greatest fan of English soccer but i must say in all its shortcomings, it does hog the headlines for all sorts of reasons. The recent issue of failure to qualify for Euro 2008 does not come much as a surprise to me. English soccer is just not good enough. It is well marketed yes but certainly not good enough. It would take someone 'special' to mould the english bunch into a formidable unit. Its unfortunate there are reports that Jose is not interested in the job. To me he has what it takes to take the english team to where it wants to be. With the local english coaches, the team should at best aim to qualify for major tournaments, nothing more. english soccer needs a foreign touch for it to make an impact. Don't forget also that the Croats played brilliantly well.

A badly managed team of overrated players. The suits and blazers at the FA need to take a long hard look at how they select the England manager; the track record is poor, like picking Graham Taylor when Jack Charlton or Brian Clough were available. Pick Allardyce, bungs and all, or Steve Coppell. Or even The Special One?
