England & McLarenEuro 2008 England by Nantastic (U8077629) 19 November 2007 As an Irishman who has witnessed yet another futile qualification campaign and waved goodbye to another manager my interest in Euro 2008 will be passive to say the least. MarkDaggers (U10472945) posted Nov 22, 2007 McLaren was essentially chosen purely because he was English, which was a quality that was so precious to large parts of the English media and press. They all hated Sven saying his team played passionless football, but many English supporters would accept that stlye of play today if it meant qualification.Put your prejudices aside and accept that the best man for the job at this moment in time will probably have to be a foreigner, whom i am sure will be able to mould Englands many talented players into a worldclass side.

Benford_Muguta (U10475554) posted Nov 23, 2007 I am not the greatest fan of English soccer but i must say in all its shortcomings, it does hog the headlines for all sorts of reasons. The recent issue of failure to qualify for Euro 2008 does not come much as a surprise to me. English soccer is just not good enough. It is well marketed yes but certainly not good enough. It would take someone 'special' to mould the english bunch into a formidable unit. Its unfortunate there are reports that Jose is not interested in the job. To me he has what it takes to take the english team to where it wants to be. With the local english coaches, the team should at best aim to qualify for major tournaments, nothing more. english soccer needs a foreign touch for it to make an impact. Don't forget also that the Croats played brilliantly well.

adriantuck (U9081416) posted Nov 23, 2007 A badly managed team of overrated players. The suits and blazers at the FA need to take a long hard look at how they select the England manager; the track record is poor, like picking Graham Taylor when Jack Charlton or Brian Clough were available. Pick Allardyce, bungs and all, or Steve Coppell. Or even The Special One? Comment on this article |
