England's day of reckoning

Euro 2008 England
comment on the article

The best performance of England's tortuous Euro 2008 qualifying campaign came in Israel on Saturday.

Israel beat Russia to put England's Euro 2008 qualification hopes back in their own hands.

England manager Steve McClaren exuded confidence before the Israel game that they would get the result his side needed and take his side's qualification campaign into their final game against Croatia on Wednesday.

The players were firm in the belief that Israel would take the game seriously, even though they had no chance of qualifying.

McClaren's bullishness and the hope of the players was justified.

On a rare occasion, the England rhetoric was backed up by actions - it is just a shame those actions were not their own.

The words emitted from the England camp have regularly failed to match up with events on the pitch.

Anyone remember the 2006 World Cup when England had all-but won the competition as they headed off to host nation Germany only to struggle, stutter and sombrely go out at the quarter-finals?

But now a day of reckoning has arrived for England and McClaren when they play Croatia on Wednesday needing at least a draw to book a Euro 2008 spot.

The progress McClaren insists his side have made in recent months can be judged, along with his own development as England manager.

England beat Russia 3-0 with an impressive performance at Wembley during a run of five wins by the same scoreline which suggested a move in the right direction.

Despite a loss in Russia, there was more encouragement from that showing.

Ahead of the Croatia tie, the odds are certainly stacked in their favour.

They are at home playing at Wembley, where they have won all their competitive games so far.

Croatia's heart for the fight may be diminished by the fact that Israel's win confirmed their place at the finals table in Austria and Switzerland.

Slaven Bilic's Croatia presumably found out at half-time of their game at Macedonia, with the score at 0-0, that Israel had won to send them through and they went on to lose 2-0.

But a relaxed Croatia could be as much of a threat as a benefit to England.

Israel had nothing to win and Russia everything to lose in Tel Aviv and look what happened there.

England will need to improve on their showing in Friday's friendly 1-0 victory in Austria and there will be no excuses if they lose.

The team can expect the firm backing of fans for the game.

But, if they get the wrong result, any chat about the difficulty of the psychological stress of the events of the past couple of days and being correctly prepared for Croatia will fall on deaf ears.

The talk of improvement or injuries will also fail to prove any consolation if England do not now qualify for Euro 2008.

If Crouch scores tonight it will be the highest ranking team he's scored against by about 20 places.

Without Crouch England would have lost the game against Austria and without Becks Crouch would not have scored.

Highly debatable. Had Bentley or SWP started the match (and no Gerrard/Lampard combo) England could have and probably would have scored 2 or 3. Beckham's lack of fitness helped suffocate our game play which in turn meant the only way we were going to score was from a set piece...

"If Crouch scores tonight it will be the highest ranking team he's scored against by about 20 places."

He has only ever started against one top 20 side. not sure which bit of this is so difficult to understand.

In addition, he has goals against the current European Champions to his name.

Further, he is the best available option by a billion miles tonight.

There isn't any debate over his inclusion — and the fact people have a go at him is purely down to his funny looks rather than his abilities.

Not from me. Its his lack of ability and his freakish looks I object to. And so he managed to score against Greece. Well done ok

Being the best available doesn't make him good.

No it means his a lot better than any1 else available. Therefore our Third best striker, and therefore the Obivous choice 2nite because owen and rooney are out.

If you honestly look at Crouch's play and think "lack of ability", fair enough.

I beg to differ.

The Crouch debate is ridiculous. He's clearly a good player and the fact he has experience, can lead a line and is a handful for any oppostion makes him a simple first choice.

What about the others? Defoe is rubbish, Bent better but no experience, Aglongbahour - no experience, Smith -Awful .

It's not hard is it.

After Benitez had ****ed around with every combination of strikers you could imagine, and some you couldn't, it was bringing back Crouch that kick started the rout of Besiktas and led to their recent gain in confidence.
I bet that if Torres and Crouch had a run of games together Liverpool would be worrying Fergie and Wenger again. Okay so he's better against weaker teams - but there are plenty of them in the Premiership and this season Liverpool with no Crouch have dropped points that they shouldn't have.

I almost like tonight's team. Bentley would deliver better crosses than SWP but at least Sean has shown that he works well with Richards in both attack and defence.

Lampard with Gerrard in midfield again? Groan!
IMO if you must play Lampard, use him as 2nd striker, a sort of B-team Rooney.
Keeps him out of Gerrard's way at least, and you can't deny that Frank's greedy for goals, in fact that's his problem when he plays in midfield for England (not Chelsea).

Mclaren had to go. I love supporting England and it grinds me to say it, but it was probably the best thing that could have happened to England. You have also got to look at the FA and their appointment of such an untested manager. During this campaign England at times lacked idea's and were so slow it was hard to watch. The F A in my opinion want a YES man, a person who won't answer back and will sit on the fence. I dont think for one minute they will go for Jose. We need the passion back and for the mighty 3 lions to roar once again - i personally think Jose has shown all these attributes and it will be a great shame if the F A dont pull their finger out.
