Healy the NI hero again

International Northern Ireland
comment on the article
David Healy

Yes, let us celebrate and savour another magnificent night at Windsor Park.

The decision to switch the Saturday qualifier, from the normal afternoon kick-off to an evening one, paid off.

I know, it almost backfired because of the weather but it didn't - and we are grateful for that.

Northern Ireland, thanks to a really determined display, rewarded by goals from Warren Feeney and inevitably David Healy, have kept our faint qualifying hopes alive for another four days.

To still be in with a chance at the end of a campaign involving Spain, Denmark and Sweden is some achievement and the players deserve so much credit.

So why do I have this nagging feeling that Northern Ireland have blown their best chance of qualifying for a major finals in decades?

Is it wrong to wonder what on earth went so horribly wrong in the opening match at home to Iceland?

Has the failure to take points from the double-header away Latvia and Iceland cost Northern Ireland a place in Austria and Switzerland?

Or am I talking rubbish and Healy will score a dramatic winner in Las Palmas just before news filters through of Latvia's victory in Stockholm and NI celebrate qualification?

Sir David Healy is a legend.

But then every one of the boys are legends.

We have guarenteed 3rd place in a group where we were expected to come 4th or 5th. Four years back we hadn't scored a goal in the whole campaign (even with Healy) and we had lost 1-0 at home to Armenia. Now we actually go into every game with real belief.

This campaign has been a huge success which is reflected in our rise up the world rankings which do matter no matter what you think about them.

Forget about the slip-ups this time around. The 3-0 to Iceland arguably gave us the kick up the ass we needed and 3 points was what we expected from the first 2 games. That's what we got.

As for the away pair in Latvia and Iceland, we've never travelled particularly well and we can't just assume that we should beat a team just because they're below us.

We have done more than what was expected of us and will be seeded 3rd at worst for the World Cup draw after the result last night. Let's get stuck in for one more great performance and pray that Sweden completely self destruct. If it doesn't happen, then celebrate what our wee country has done. We haven't had a lot to celebrate over the last 15 years.

Was another memorable night at windsor and was a full rollercoaster of emotions, we got into the ground at bout 7:15 to be told that the ref may be calling it off, dominated the opening exchanges, before falling behind shortly after the break. After Denmark scored the fans really found their voice (as is sometimes the case with OWC) with 'we're gonna win 2-1' ringing out around the ground. Feeney was exceptional throughout and Sammy Clingon showed his calibure again. Brunt and Keef worked endlessly before we got our more than deserved equaliser. The Danes couldn't understand that scoring against us at windsor actually lifts the crowd and the players. Instead of getting on our teams back we lifted them to another level. Then Feeny with a thunderbold from 25 yards smacks the post and you just new that elusive goal was coming. Everytime Healy gets the ball in and around the box we just expect and again the wee man delivered. That chip for me was the best goal he has scored in a green shirt and probably the best goal he has scored in his footballing career. CHAOUS FOLLOWED. The guy infront of me was easily an OAP and I couldn't help but jump all over him!The bedlam that followed was superb although we survived a late onslaught (which was the only time the whole game the danes looked dangerous) we deserved our victory and becasue of our performances in this group of 'death' deserve our chance on the big stage! Im hoping that the mega stars from sweden freeze against latvia and that the mighty G*A*W*A get their chance to show the world what we are all about. Everyone needs to remember that we're not brazil but by God we can mix it with the big boys! Forget the games against Iceland and Latvia and remember that this time 4 years ago we went through a whole qualifying campaign without scoring a goal. NI have no regrets, we are a proud nation and we are ofically the greatest wee country in the WORLD!!!!

thanks Scotland bhoy. I think our optimism is rather tongue in cheek. But this team has something even the Bingham squad didn't have. The ability to bounce back when behind.4 points each from Sweden and Denmark,on 3 out 4 occasions when opposition were in front, and 3 (so far) from Spain (from behind)means we are ready for anything. We're always optimistic, but realistic if we don't get there.

This is the same team that not too long ago couldn't even win any matches and really struggled to score goals. If I remember correctly, they conceded the fastest ever hatrick against Turkey.

Doyle ?

-----------------------------

you OBVIOUSLY don't have much of a clue about Northern Ireland NBG ! No your wrong about the fastest ever hat-trick being scored against us and Doyle plays for the Beggars sorry I mean Republic!

I'm actually surprised the BBC knew this match was on judging by the lack of coverage on all mediums, web, tv and radio! Same applies to Sky TV. The media as per norm think England have ALREADY qualified. When are they going to learn that England do not have a god given right to qualify for any tournement never mind win the thing. Expectations are far too high but we've come to expect that haven't we?! We Norn Iron fans don't have high expectations therefore when we have a good win we enjoy it even more! If we loose so what we'll party anyway!

Hopefully after this campaign the English media and press will give our team and David Healy the respect they deserve!

Over and out!

I took my dad to watch the match at Windsor, he has never seen us win in the flesh, so was a bit of a gamble on his part to go! but so delighted at the final whistle !!!.... to actually still have a chance of qualifying (no matter how slim) on the final game of the group is just unbelievable !
the stars must be lining up for us and who in their right mind would bet against us not qualifying !!! still believe !

Coverage on us has been poor, but i'd like to suggest the fact that our best games have been on BBC NI, when I watched us on sky sports they were the games against Latvia and Iceland, so as long as we're being broadcasted on BBC NI this wednesday there's no telling what might happen.
Healy you legend!

The fastest ever hatrick I was referring to was the one scored by Arif Erdem in 1999 in less than 4 minutes. The record has most probably been broken now. The only reason I referred to it was to show how much of an improvement there has been in the N. Ireland national team.

As for Colin Doyle, yes that was a mistake, but that's no reason to say that I have no knowledge of Northern Irish football, especially given that I was full of praise for them in my post.
