Poulter wins in Japan

by Paul G - BBC Sport (U1723268) 18 November 2007
comment on the article

England's Ian Poulter has won the Dunlop Phoenix event in Japan by three strokes.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/gol...

It's his first tournament victory outside Europe, but will it be the springboard for a strong challenge by Poulter for a major title in 2008?

Does he have what it takes to win a major? What do you think?

I think the BBC are trying to get value for money out of its staff - nice to see they are keeping the Cricket editor busy by asking him to report on a golf tournament !

Think the article needs a bit of editing though - "Poulter has won the event in Japan by three strokes"......."It's his first tournament victory OUTSIDE Japan...."

Too much sake Paul G ?

Poulter has a great deal of talent but not the temperament to hold it together in a major for four consecutive days.

bigstevie, here's an admission for you - I used to be cricket editor but I'm not any more following a departmental restructure and, unfortunately, I don't know how to change the byline which appears whenever I contribute to 606. Thanks for spotting my 'outside Europe' slip, by the way, the text has been amended.

I still think he is more interested in style than in substance. Luke Donald has had a dreadful year so was always going to drop away. Harrington did well at the end of a very long season for a new Open Championship winner. Otherwise no one of note was near the business end. Poulter has not fared very well on final days before when the pressure is on. If he hadn't holed a "lucky" 40 footer mid way through his round yesterday, it might have been a different story. I'm glad he won though as some of my friends from Mount Murray club on the Isle of Man met him a few months ago at a tournament and he was really genuinely friendly. Not a major winner though I fear. Nice to see Miguel Angel Jiminez back to form as well. He'll be in the next Ryder Cup squad, as will Poults, Harrington etc. Not soo sure about Luke Donald. He simply isnt long enough off the tee. Tom Watson out drove him consistently at this year's Open.

Hi Paul,

You raise a good point, not just about Ian Poulter (I'm a big fan so count me prejudiced in this discussion), but about:

Who does what on the Beeb web-site, especially vis-a-vis golf?

There is a strong feeling that we only hear from Iain Carter when he's marketing BBC coverage, and occasionally we used to hear from Messrs Slater and Hodgetts.

But this site only receives skeletal golf coverage. Is it destined to become a 606-user only board with articles and news just on those subjects golf fans already know about? Is golf about to be relegated to "other sports"?

Some insight would be useful, especially as some of us are virtually paying with advertising these days.

I personally think that Poults does not have what it takes to win a major, he like Casey have unbeleievable talent but do not have the consistancy to win a major.
I think our biggest hope has to be Justin, he was 2nd overall in all the majors combined this year to Tiger.
