Austria - England

comment on the article

Good evening everyone,

It's eyes down for England's friendly in Austria, and I'll be bringing you the live text from tonight's game.

I'm a bit of a cynic when it comes to international friendlies these days - but can tonight be a worthwhile exercise? What can McClaren learn from it?

Do get involved and let me know what you think.

Well, it's looking rather dubious for England after this evening's dire display.

Who's hoping that we get eliminated tomorrow, if only to put us out of our misery? sadface

Even the BBC link to the "match reaction" thread is broken.

Sure, we can all dream of playing for england and of putting more pride and effort than the current bunch, but thats because it would be a massive game for us. With the current premier league crammed with some of the 'biggest' names in football and our teams regularly playing against the rest in european games, england games become just another match.
So if players are not going to raise their game why not just pick the players who are in-form at the time of the match. Dont pick the 'big' names on reputation only, give the shirts to the ones who deserve it. Surely Bentley and Barry should on current form be in the England starting 11 and if they were transfered to Man U or Chelsea they would both be regulars in the team under the current biased selection policy. Thats not a knock at MU and Chelsea, they are top teams in the premier league and therefore attract attention, but foreign talent plays its part in their (deserved) success, it doesn't mean that their english players are the best for the England team (Wes Brown???).
Take your blinkers off, Pick Without Prejudice.

"Kids have to stop playing on xboxes and PS2s and get out and play football just like Gerrard did. This is why Brazil and Argentina are so good, it's because they are impoverished, so get out and play instead of sitting on their backsides playing space invaders."

=That is so true :|

"Why can't we see Lampard and Barry together? We know Barry and Gerrard can click"
=I would agree to that if Wednesday wasn't a must win. It has to be Gerrard-Barry for me.

"BECKHAM SHOULD GET HIS HUNDRED CAPS AND POSH CAN BUY HIM 100 SCARFS TO GO WITH THEM"
=LOLL HUH?!

"How is playing on to let Lampard have a shot playing advantage?"
=The ref can't have seen who had the ball. If he knew it was Lampard he MUST have ordered a free kick instead.

If mcclaren was on ‘experimenting’ with gerrard and lampard tonight, and knew that the result and midfield would be bad, why not just play two other average midfielders (Lampard&Someone) and save Gerrard for Wednesday?

Oh, agreed on James. He's scary to watch.

BUT. He's had some good form for his club of late, and years of experience.

I'd actually play Carson. What have we got to lose? Oh right....biggrin

But no matter what, we'll need to score, and that's what's worrying me the most at the moment because I have a hard time seeing where we might get some goals.
