A fair day's pay?

Womens Football England
comment on the article

The England Women football team reached the last eight of the World Cup in China in September. And earned £40 per day from the Football Association while doing so.

Am I alone in thinking this is a mistake?

First off, let's be clear. Even the women internationals themselves are not saying they should be earning the same as their male counterparts. Far from it.

But £40 per day - which broadly equates to the national minimum wage - has effectively financially penalised the women for representing their country.

What is the knock-on effect of this? The players have to work extra hours to make up the shortfall in wages. Their fitness suffers as a result. The quality of play - good enough for a last-eight finish at the World Cup - will inevitably suffer.

Performances will be poorer. England's women may begin to struggle to qualify for major tournaments. The sport, already struggling for exposure, will get even less coverage. The players' profiles will get lower.

All this on a day when figures show that just 20% of young women in the UK are doing a healthy amount of exercise.

The England Women team represents a golden opportunity for the FA to promote a sport which provides good female sporting role models.

Will today's teenagers aspire to become part of a team which will cost them financially in the long run?

To give the FA credit, investment in the women's game has increased. Indeed, an FA spokesman points out that it has never put more money into the women's game than it does now.

But to my mind, it's still not enough. What do you think?

KSmith, you can dress it up any way you want, but no-one is willing to pay that much money to watch something as pash as womens football.

They should get paid much more than £40 a day. Yes they are not on the same level as the mens team but they put as much or if more effort in and passion when the play. If they had as much funding ect.. like the mens team gradually the quality of all the players will increase. Many young boys look at the professional mens teams and see how much money they get paid and it gives them something to work at, girls don't have that they need part time jobs even if they where playing in the top premier league and for there country! just not fair in my eyes men and women should be equal in every sport!

I'd like to point out the fact that the reason were are not so high up the world league tables in sports other than MENS football because that is the only sport that dominates our country and has nobody ever thought that if we capped players wages in the premier league and used the extra revenue to help "amatuer" sports then we may do a lot better!!! How many articles do we see in the papers on womens acheivements in sport unless they agree to wear little clothing!!! Its disgusting and the ladies team should not be treated as 2nd class to the men!!!

really lovely sentiments from the last two posts there, i was almost weeping at one point, but it still doesn't address the fairly serious issue of women's football being pash and therefore not deserving any more money. dressing it up as "equality" or affirmative action or whatever doesnt make it any more entertaining, i'm afraid.

so its agreed then that the supportes for more pay are going to go and support their local womens team? Show the FA that people are interested? Hmmm??
Also again, they KNEW WHAT THEY WERE SIGNING BEFORE THEY LEFT!!! Why didn't they dispute it then?? Most probably as they were as surprised as anyone when they got that far and then tried to push their luck!
I am sure that all amature sports people try their best and put thier heart into it! there just isn't funding for more money!!
The men bring in the money!! so they get paid the money!! you don't pay kids for playing doctors and nurses, you pay the real doctors and nurses!! same principle!!

I now and live with my American wife in the States and we followed all the action from last year's Women's World Cup. We loved every minute of it and were thoroughly entertained. Damn right they should get paid more! They are great ambassadors for our country and I hope my own daughters will grow up to be football superstars just like them.......maybe

"The men bring in the money!! so they get paid the money!! "

If this is the case, then why are so many football clubs in debt? The wages paid for men are just getting ridiculous! Who on earth needs more than £100,000 per week? If anything we should respect the women more, as many of them have to more committed to the game than the men, having to fit in training around their day jobs, rather than it being their day job!! To more that shows a hell of a lot more dedication to the game, and thus deserves a lot more respect than half of you seem to be giving the women credit for.

Can;t wait for the f.a. cup final on Monday!!!

i agree with Smith-11. £40 a day is less than what they would earn just working their own job at home. it is extremely sexist to have such little funding in a sport which the whole world watches and participates in. in other sports such as tennis and the olypics women earn just as much as men and do not have to have a second job to support their family, so why should football be any different? football is not just a mens sport. if im honest i see just as many women go to watch their local team as men do. if the f.a wont put any extra funding into it beacause they cannot afford it then they should drop how much they invest in mens football as it is already established and use the spare funds in womens football and give them the same wages. in an office it is illegal to pay someone less money for working beacause they are a woman so why should it be any different on the pitch? football is for everyone!!
