Twenty20 showdown

India
by Paul G - BBC Sport (U1723268) 15 November 2007
comment on the article

The teams have been announced for the Indian Cricket League, a Twenty20 competition which is not sanctioned by the game's governing bodies.

Brian Lara, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Chris Cairns, Damien Martyn, Lance Klusener and Chris Read are among the names involved.

But what chance does the ICL have of establishing itself, when the Board of Control is planning to launch its own rival Indian Premier League next year?

You can read the background to the stand-off in a new feature by the BBC's Rahul Tandon, see news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cri...

Which league will you be following? Are the BCCI right to take a tough line against the so-called 'rebel' competition? Let us know what you think.

Nick IOM, the US is a good example.

The current NFL was created by merging the AFL and NFL, which up until the 1960's had been rival leagues, not dis-similar to the current IPL / ICL situation.

Of course it's difficult to say what effect this had on standards as no other countries play the game.

ICL gives a lot of young and budding cricketers an opportunity to earn a good living which they deserve. When we see a handful of cricketers making millions, we feel happy about that but nobody wants to look on the other side of the picture where thousands budding cricketers don't even have a modest earning to support their family and give their children a good life because they can not make to the highly competitive national team. Whats wrong with them giving this opportunity to earn a good life. The crab indian mentality which is clearly evident with BCCI threatning cricketers of banning them to play for the country is not going to do any good to the cricket and the nation. Shame on BCCI.

Please Please Please for 'God shake'....STOP calling ICL a rebel league. It is very good for cricket and many other young cricketers. Anyone calling ICL a rebel league should also call the club level game in football as a rebel football league. Atleast BBC should not use this word....

This is good for Cricket and will bring more youngsters into Cricket. How many Professional cricket players making good money? This will boost their salary and demand. At last Cricket is will become like Football/Hockey/Basketball in terms of generating money for the players, clubs, city and great feast for the fans.

ICL is good for World cricket, especially young cricketers from all over the world. I agree with Manish_6031, don't call it as a rebel league.
BCCI doing all these nasty things(stopping player's to join) for money, shame on BCCI.
BCCI should learn from European soccer league's.
Best of luck for ICL

Indian Cricket League is a boost to the level of domestic cricket in India. Indians have always focussed on International Cricket and only a handful of Indian Players have been able to make a living out of cricket. With spending power increasing in India and the need for new avenues of entertainment, ICL cricket would be a blessing for Indian Domestic cricketers and an enormous amount of entertainment for the viewers. BCCI realizes this and since it doesnt want to compromize its monopoly and big bucks, its trying to fiercely oppose ICL. But I think ICL will emerge victorious.

banning something like this will never work. History has proven this time and time again. I think ICL will slowly but surly win over the fans and attract more crowds, especially since they seem to have the money to carry this forward.
