Scotland-Italy: Now it’s personal

James Sugrue of Calcio Italia magazine writes on the Five Football Italiano blog: "The tragic events of the past few days have seen Italian football once again dragged through the mud by ill-informed pundits in the foreign media, with one Scottish writer even describing calcio as a cancer on the face of the game.

The columnist in question was Chick Young speaking in his latest column on BBC Sport ( news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/sco... **). I usually have nothing but respect for the BBC’s reporting of world sport. However, this stereotyped and sensationalist outburst shows that everyone has their off days.

Young goes on to appeal to the Scottish national team to eliminate Italy from the Euro 2008 qualifiers in order to rid the world of their plague. Everyone is biased when supporting their own team, but this is a step too far and borders on racism. Also, to say that a nation that is going through a difficult time should not be able to compete is a ludicrous suggestion - if they aren’t allowed to play on, then how can they possibly fix their problems.

Probably the most regrettable thing about this lambasting in the Scottish Press though is that the Tartan Army has been shown nothing less than the respect they deserve in Italy. Their impressive achievements in qualifying so far have been rightly praised in the peninsula’s Press and their fans were also well greeted in Bari and praised for their passionate support. Surely the Azzurri deserve the same respect in Scotland."

I bet a months wages you will find some italian journo doing the same, most likely picking apart our eating habits and our lack of trophies and thwe size of our country.
-------------------------------------------
Post your email address, and I will send the bank details to transfer the cash to. You won't find that kind of infantile behaviour on the Italian press. On telly, maybe, but not in the press.

Hopefully it will be a good match, but I have a feeling the Jocks will try and rough up the Italians (or "let them know they are there" as the lingo has it)

Good luck Scotland!

We need at least one British side to watch next summer, let's hope it's two and we're not playing with ourselves!

Oops, that didn't come out right, hehe.

Just to remind to all those that would like to see Italian football out of international games like happened with the English clubs in the 80's,that were the English clubs to be punished and not the National Team. There is another difference:the English Fans in the 80's were known to make troubles at Home and Abroad, with all of this culminating with the sad Heysel's night.Italian fans are making troubles at Home, but very seldom abroad, and I hardly remember one single incident of Italian fans making troubles abroad when following the National Team.Truth is that the troubles in Italy are due to the incompetence and ineptitude of politicians and football Clubs responsibles, that have let the Ultras taking the upper hand,in some case even being accomplices.Italian Police has never been an example of patience, but every Sunday they need to be deployed in large forces (at taxpayers expences)to face these thousand of thugs and Idiots, that go to games like they are gong to war.It is here that our political system has failed. These were not just disturbances, but real eversion against the power of the state.Eversors, as that should have been punished.Going back to Football:Italy and Scotland will play to the death on Saturday, and surely, whoever will come out as the winner will be deserving the next summer European trip..

Can you imagine how much the Scottish would be supporting Italy if it was England who were in their position? Its a good job that most of the English posters here aren't as bitter and bigoted as the Scots are. Most of the English seem to be wishing Scotland well. I'm not bothered either way to be honest. I think Italy will hold on to the ball and play for the draw.

Italy have become the black sheep of the beautiful game..they cheat at every chance, every tournement (should have lost to Aussies in Germany and Milan should never have been given the chance to play in last years CL) they are disreputable CHEATS. They do not deserve to play in another tournement until they can get their disgraceful fans and corrupt owners or anyone to shape up. their behavior is horrible and an embarrassment to sport. Failing to qualify would be a step in the right direction for Italian football.

You have no history. How I fail to understand how anyone who has to watch Grenta v Falkirk knows anything about the beautiful game. 90% British of football is still about the 3 yard dash - poor technique and aggression. Watch the best league in the world Serie A and you may learn something come to think of it watch Serie C and see a better standard of football than you are used to

i am so tired to hear the comments of these british people who think to be the only clean part of the football..give us a rest guys... please it's scotland vs italy. Can u stop talking about cheating, scandals and every other thing that make you happy for a while?
I just hope it will be a good match, whoever will win. And i even hope we'll be treated like we treated scottish people here in italy.

Orrick. In reply to your "ballanced" and "justified" comments, Australia were played off the park by Italy in the World Cup even with Italy playing with 10 men for most of the game! Just look at the game stats! Italy had 11 shots on target to Aussies 4! To reiterate what the the TV pundits said at the time, that penalty would have been given by most ref's! Italy played Germany in the best game of the finals (bar Argentina-Mexico)& beat them with 2 brilliant goals in a stadium where the Germans had never lost before. During the finals they scored 12 goals & conceded 2, 1 a penalty & the other an own goal! Just to remind you, they beat the Czechs, France, Germany, Ukraine and Ghana during the tournament so were more than worthy winners! To then get a moral lecture on fans creating trouble is risable! Yes there is a seriuos problem, but at least its kept at home and will be dealt with appropriately!

ok well first of all..

we are the world champions

and sure on currnet form we havent had the best of games...

but, we have our captain back.
in response to the guy below me,
use may have the crowd, but we have
1-gigi buffon
2-canavaro
3-andrea pirlo (whom i think, is one of the worlds best footballers, without a doubt)
4-Luca Toni, who will win headers against anyone.

so to you scottish fans who think you've got an easy win, think back to the world cup, we knocked off the toughest of challenges from guss hiddinks australia, to klinsman's germany,,

so, think about it
to score, its probably got to be a penalty or a own goal, as were the only goals conceded in the world cup by us..

and with our current sqaud all playing at premier level (non in serie b nemore)

im sorry but its gona take a miracle for you to qualify
