Fisher so close

European Tour
comment on the article

You have to feel for Ross Fisher.

The 26-year-old from Surrey, who won the KLM Open and finished fifth in Dubai earlier this season, had the biggest shot of his life when in the greenside rough at the 18th in Shanghai on Sunday.

But he had too heavy a contact from the Bermuda grass with his third shot and slid into the water.

Anywhere on the green - and even three putts - would have been enough for the title.

But he had to take a fifth from the water and needed two more putts to get down.

Inevitably, Phil Mickelson beat him in the play-off...

But how good is this man Fisher? He did really well in only his second full year on the European Tour. Does he have the game to be something special?

Yes the caddy must take some of the blame... but maybe he overuled the caddy? we will never know. think Ross Fisher will do well in the next 18 months and will be mentally tougher as a result of blowing a big chance.

As for the ridiculous comment above about Micklesons ball striking... thats like saying good job Tiger is the best putter because hes all over the place off the tee.... Mickleson is and has not played consistently well for ages... but he is class

The eighteenth hole normal play seemed a comedy of errors, neither Mickelson nor Fisher seemed to want to win the competition. To be fair to Mickelson he had a pretty bad day but commeth the hour commeth the man and he played good golf in the play off holes. Clearly Ross Fisher has to try and put a positive spin on the debacle yesterday. Comments like it's been a great week and I can walk out of here with my head held high is masking what must be a major disappointment. The second shot was fine, Fisher played away from the lake and although he found the rough it didn't appear to be too bad a lie. The caddy is not too blame with the third shot which was awful- he handed Ross fisher the club but the caddy didn't hit the shot. Appreciate that it was not the easiest of shots but he only had to carry the bunker and then take three putts. He could even have hit it in the bunker, hit out and take two putts!
Massive error, Euros 275k mistake, not to mention world ranking points and all that goes with that

Caddy is there for advice. No player should let the caddy have the final say. We probably all learn more from our failures than our successes, so hopefully Fisher will do the same. Build on this, not lament the lost opportunity.

Mickelson is class ... even after his tee ball got real loose, he managed to stay focused enough to be in contention. It's what winners do and good for him.

It made for some great viewing.

knowing mickelson probably wouldnt have made a 4 he should have chipped to the fron of the green and 2 putts - however he didnt and its too bad for him but he looks a good player. You cant keep giving someone o mickelson's class chance after chance because with his short game he will eventually punish you as he showed on the second playoff hole.

He played the 18th well both times - not going for the green the first time and going for it when he knew he could - smart thinking for once from Phil!

Yes, 2jandat - exactly! He had no business going anywhere near the pin with the chip from the greenside rough. Mickelson's best bet was a five. It was a quite extraordinary moment.

Sky completely missed the point - they kept on harping back to his error in terms of going for the green with his second shot...

I disagree that Ross player the wrong shot from the fairway.

Ross only had a one shot lead at the 18th. Phil was probably 50/50 to make a birdie, perhaps more. If the shot was on and he fancied it, he made the correct decision. If he had laid up, made a 5 and Phil made a 4, then he lost a play-off, he would have regretted laying up. If a player has a 50/50 call, better to loose playing the more positive shot.

The pitch was the killer. Seems to me he felt he had enough room to stop the ball on the green but he got a bit twitchy and over hit it.

Ross needs to focus on the positives and I'm sure he will. Might even see him pushing for a Ryder Cup place.

It definetly wasn't the wrong call from the fairway because his second shot finished quite close to the green. When he was playing his third shit he knew that micklson was playing four having gone into the water.

So Fisher was playing three and mickelson was playing four giving fisher a 2 stroke lead really with only half a hole to play.

Looking back on it he will feel that he should have got it onto the front of the green with his third and then 2 putt and probably guaranteed himself a victory. The shot he play was a bizarre moment in golf. Trying to flop the ball into the air and getting it to land soft with spin from a heavy lie onto a downslope was totally the wrong shot.

Only the top, top players in golf who have the experiance to even try such shot was going to pull that one off ( as phil showed in the playoff)

Fisher's a tremendous talent. I just wonder if his chipping is his achilles heal. His technique looked dodgy on an earlier effort. Same could be said of Westwood who knifed one in the drink as well.
I hope he comes back strongly and features in the Ryder Cup, with his power and birdie making ability he could be quite an asset. He'll need to improve his consistency to make it though.

Err no its nothing like that at all. Tiger is the best ball striker in the World. When he hits the ball it will carry come rain or wind whatever...Phils won't
