i suggest that if the interview whets you appetite you read his autobiography. I thought it was excellent - very well written and also very enlightening.

I'll try and find it ... I enjoyed reading about him previously (some years ago!)in Cycling Weekly.
home-made bike vs Boardman's Lotus / marmalade sandwiches vs powerbar etc !

Have to echo omgidbi's Flying Scotsman recommendation.

His rivalry with Boardman is touched on, although I was left with the feeling Obree held his opinions back a little. Ditto with the drugs issue.

Its not all an easy read, there’s some frank stuff about both his childhood and adult depression. Some more lighthearted moments as well, like the time his mates tried to slow him down by putting a rock in his pannier.

A must read not only for cyclists but also those moved by human endeavour.

Haven’t seen the movie yet, but the dvd is on the present list.

the personal stuff is quite tough at times, but the one story i took away with me from this book, was when he turned up to do a road TT, a "10" or "25", and only had a fixed gear to ride on a totally unsuitable course (ie hilly/windy etc). i have this strange mental image of a ridiculous cadence - with him trying to pedal out a hill on a bmx.

The DVD of The Flying Scotsman is due out Monday I believe (19/11/07). I have seen it at the Glasgow Film Theatre (Independent Cinema in Glasgow) and it is a fantastic film. Well written, directed with some fantastic scottish scenery.

Go watch it even if cycling is not your bag.

Graeme Obree, a fantastic maverick who rocked the world of cycle sport so much that the authorities tried to scupper his inventions.

A true cycling legend.
