Price of Enginsh players

Just when you thought the price of English players was stupid, it takes another step into La La land.

Burnley want to hold onto one of their best up and coming talents, you can understand that, but putting a price tag of £1M on a 14 year old boy is just ...... I don't even know how to describe it.

People ofter slap Liverpool and Arsenal with the same stick of not trying to promote English players, but when being faced with a situation like this, you can understand why they go abroad for young talent.

Does anyone here feel that the price tag is justified?

Is there a solution to the price differerence between English and foreign players?

Manchester United have the most famous and successful youth policy in England, maybe the world. Arsenal have more foreigners than any other team, closely followed by Liverpool. If SAF thinks this kid is worth the money, who are we to argue? We are going to hammer Blackburn 3-0 today. Oh, and by the way, this kid is as English as the rest of us, he has been raised here, his father serves in our armed forces and he has represented England at schoolboy level, how many of us can say that?

Like most comments on this site the point of the argument gets lost in a frenzy of "my clubs better than yours.. na na na na na na......"
The original point is, was is it right that clubs are arguing/signing approaching and paying huge sums of money for 14 YEAR OLD KIDS.
Where does the line get drawn?
Will clubs start paying for/claiming the embryo's of their star player's wags in case they might be good in the future?
Arguing about which "country" he might belong to or play for is way off the mark.
I'm starting to feel SICK the way clubs are scouring the world trying to entice kids, it just smacks of old world exploitation and corporate greed.

Rafa's Reds, you do realise that Cofie is not English as you wrote "Just when you thought the price of English players was stupid, it takes another step into La La land."

Cofie is a German-born Ghanaian as some others have already stated.

As for the price, that is ridiculous for a 14 year old, it will only be justified if he really does become a great player.

But fair do's to Burnley, if they can't keep hold of their young talent then they might as well make as much money as possible. And as for Cofie going to United, you know he's going to get good training and develop well. If anything, Arsenal and United know how to develop youngsters.

I just think it's a shame smaller clubs aren't protected by the FA or FIFA in some way, to stop bigger clubs poaching their young talents.

One last thing:

The problem was introduced a few years back when teams were stopped from signing players outside the local area (think it was a 25m radius) - so instead of encouraging local players to teams they go abroad to get round the rule and pick up the foreign youngsters now.

the youngster is good, but man utd is the wrong place for him to develop as a player. A player of his quality should be palying under chelsea system, barca, liverpool or even Arsenal.

ugochukwu1947:

Man Utd is the wrong place for him to develop he should be at chelsea??? Excuse me?

What are you talking about you idiot!!! Man Utd are one of the best clubs in the world for developing youngsters. Just look at players like Scholes, Giggs, Beckham and in more recent years Ronaldo. OK so he wasnt there quite as young as the others but its clear to see how well he's matured as a player.

You say 'or even Arsenal' as though it's a last resort! They'd probably be the next club you'd want for developing a youngster. Not Chelsea or Liverpool.

What a clown!
