Report l Olympic stadia gallery

London 2012 officials have revealed the much-anticipated design for their new £496m Olympic Stadium.

The general public finally got the chance to see what the centrepiece of the Games will look like when the organisers unveiled the plans on Wednesday.

The design has already been compared to a 'fruit bowl' by some observers but officials will be hoping for a generally positive response from the public following the criticism that the official 2012 logo received in June.

Work on the 80,000-seater stadium will begin three months ahead of schedule in April 2008.

It was initially expected to cost £280m but costs have spiralled dramatically.

What do you think of the design?

Please check on the sources I have suggested.
They have five years before the event and have already suggested all or most of the contigency will be spent.
No cushion at all.
The fact is that the eventual real costs will be well above this amount.
In five years the amount admitted to has risen over five fold.
Just who thinks this is going to suddenly halt now?

It's functional, it's simple, it's unique and it could work well during the games.
But if it does not have a post-Olympic owner we will end up with yet another white elephant.

Clicked on the link to see the promo video about the new stadium. All I can say is that I hope the finished result is better than the video - it was dreadful. Four minutes of childish animated graphics which revealed very little other than a very worrying insight into how far into their own little dream palace the orgabisers are slipping.

I´m sorry, this architecture is like a typical American bowl.It is too high, commercial, bombastic, very usual and boring. It looks closed to the surrounding area. Compare it with the Olympic stadium of Munich that is situated very well in the landscape, it expresses lightness and innovation by using organic forms and it is very well integrated with the other buildings. It is simply a all time masterpiece of architecture.

The Munich stadium also had a good useful life as a sporting venue posts games. Bayern Munich were the tenants until a new stadium was build for the 2006 World Cup, it has hosted a football world cup final in 74' as well as a host of athletic events. Will the 2012 stadium have the same lasting appeal?

The best thing of all however about that stadium in Munich is that England beat Germany there by 5 goals to 1 in 2001!

Typically British, typically boring. There is no wow factor at all with this stadium. Unlike the past 3 Olympics where the stadium has had a real wow factor, the British once again have to be reserved in design. Thank goodness for the aquatics centre next to it, the only venue brave enough to have a magnificient design and general wow factor. I think the designers, though being practical, have not shown to the world Britains most diverse architechture. It's such a shame, as the one chance that Britain gets to shine and show off to the world, they firstly come up with a truely dreadful, mind boggling logo, that still plays trouble on my eyes and then a just, well, dull and boring looking stadium. Theres nothing that shines. the original "Muscles" wrapped around the stadia was a far more outgoing, impressive and creative design. I'd like to know when and where they suddenly ditched a great idea in favour of a fruit bowl with no character. The wrong people have clearly been used to design this stadium and the committee that commissioned the horrifc logo seriously need their heads examining.
