Is Sachin right to reject captaincy?

International Tests India
comment on the article

Sachin Tendulkar has turned down the chance to become India's Test captain.

The legendary batsman, 34, was skipper for two spells from 1996-2000 but stood down after only four wins in 25 Tests.

He was offered a third stint to succeed Rahul Dravid, who quit in September, but told TV channel CNN-IBN: "I don't feel right about it at the moment."

Do you think Sachin is right to have turned down the captaincy?

Or should he have answered his country's call?

Let us know your thoughts.

concerned cricketer, i agree with you that dravid is a great batsman and a true gentleman but no way is he a good captain

he was totally dictated to by greg chappell and was effectively a 'yes-man'

he has one good leadership quality which is setting the example e.g. test in jamaica 2006

but whenever things start going wrong e.g. world cup 2007 he is not the type of captain like ganguly who can turn the situation around

he was also quite negative e.g. the oval 2007 and managed to let huge advantages slip e.g. karachi test 2006

ganguly was 100 times better than dravid at captaincy

Sachin is getting old and old == conservative. India should have young captain. While Sachin is in the team make him deputy so Dhoni can learn and still keep the aggression that Ganguly had.

If you're invited to do something and decline then that 's the end of it - some would ask what was the reasoning from the Indian managemet that prompted them to ask him for the third time when he didn't inspire through his captaincy in either of the first two.

Bangbang, Yes Ganguly is the best captain we have had. I was only replying to crazy4cric's "by the way , hope rahul dravid get's dropped from the squad , he's not a good player.."

Albondiga, The reasoning would be that there were no other options, if they thought it too early for Dhoni.

For most of the ppl who admire Ganguly being the best captain.

There is one point which was in his favour at that time and it is a very crucial point esp in Indian Cricket, is that he was given a free hand in picking his team.Dalmiya was the BCCI President then and gave Ganguly an almost free hand in selection and other matters.

Whereas for Sachin and Dravid it was not the case.

Very diffcult for all to know the answer....
Only he knows why he did not accept Captaincy..
And he will never disclose this.. take my words.
The simple reasons what he will say are...
1. Personal issues.
2. Give it to youngsters.
3. Happy as a Vice Captain.
If he is not that intrested may be I will go for... Laxman or Kumble.
Can I be the BCCI Selector for 1 year.....winkeyewinkeye

4minars,
That's probably true about the time when Ganguly captained. But I wonder if giving a free hand will create a successful captain, why don't the BCCI do it again and again?

concerned,
It is all Politics.
Similar reasons caused Dravid to step down.
Sachin might have enjoyed some support as he is from Mumbai, but he has taken a good decision thinking about the extra pressure which comes with Captaincy.

bring on the dhoni...sachin and dravid have wimped
out...its a good job someone in indian cricket has
some guts...mahendra singh dhoni was the only
man for the tough job that is the indian captaincy. it's time sachin and dravid retired
they are not good enough anymore. i dont mind
ganguly carrying on since he has shown in his
career that he has some 'fire in his belly'

Thanks MP,

I agree with you that this is a much, much better side than the 96'-97' and the 99'-00' sides but i very much doubt it if Sachin would have been tempted. He was given a rough treatment by the selectors and he had no control over team selections. Once, he even went to the extent of saying that he was given a 'B' team.

When the selectors went to him for the second time after the 1999 world cup debalce, he took a long ride out of town and the selectors could not get hold of him. "he has gone out" came the answer from his wife whenever they tried to call him. (Not sure whether they had his mobile number) He made his intention clear that he didn't wanted the captaincy. But the slelectors, just like now ,did not wanted to give the captaincy to jadeja who was the vice captain.

i did not see anywhere where Sachin had expressed a liking for the post but we saw laxman expressing he's ready for the job. This is what confuse me. They don't want to give the job to a guy ready for it, instead went to a guy who does not want it...it was very similar to the coach vacancy..funny
