Calzaghe v Kessler

Super middle
comment on the article

I've set up this thread as the ongoing one to be used in the build-up to the big fight, you can then follow it live on BBC radio and online, and post all your reaction here. I'm going to the Millennium Stadium and plan to add my thoughts (for what they're worth!) through the week.

The main preview/fight report is at news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/box... with a feature on how Calzaghe has shone in the big fights at news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/box... and a look inside the Calzaghe gym at news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/box...

Going to be suprisingly easy for calzaghe , write it down ! kessler is far over rated and to match against of calzaghes power, i predict an easy win with kessler trying to press joe but to no avail and being made to miss. CALZHAGE TKO 8

I find it interesting that the American audience (mainly) rubbishes anyone who fights the majority of their fights either in their own backyard or on the same continent. Pot, kettle, black????

I've already said Kessler is a better fighter than Calzaghe so if Calzaghe somehow wins, I'll praise him for it. This isn't a personal agenda, this is sport and Calzaghe has been bad for Boxing until today.

No, you're ignoring the fact that the likes of Jones Jr, Hopkins, Tarver, Johnson, James Toney and so on have fought each other with Calzaghe missing from the equation. Calzaghe is a stay at home fighter, Ricky Hatton is NOT. This cannot be argued. You try and somehow compensate this FACT by saying Joe Calzaghe is fighting Mikkel Kessler. It doesn't work sunshine. Kessler has a few good wins, funny how Calzaghe disregards Kessler's victories of Beyer & Mundine when Calzaghe wanted to fight them! Look for the BBC articles, well documented. On the flipside, Kessler isn't great or an established champion like a Bernard Hopkins. In no way am I knocking Kessler, he is a GOOD fighter! But Calzaghe is 35 and admits Kessler is the best man he is facing, Kessler is 28 and it's Kessler's time now, the number don't lie. I'll give Calzaghe credit for beating Kessler but I very much doubt he will and that is why I have money on the table. Kessler is stronger, younger, hungrier, just a much much better fighter. The only obstacle I see is the crown, stay-at-home Joe's usual hometown advantage may work for him but again, I doubt it. Come on Kessler, retire Mr. Calzaghe and take over America.

Calzaghe, by his own admission, has said he'd beat the fighter he was at 30, were they to meet. As impossible as that is, he's saying he's a far better boxer now than he was at 30. Kessler, is 28. Think it through...if Calzaghe is speaking honestly, age is certainly not an issue. As far as Kessler being hungrier goes, that again is questionable. Kessler believes he has great things to achieve in his weight. Fair enough. The only reason Joe hasn't retired is that he belives he has much more to achieve, again at this weight. Looking at that, you'd have to say each boxer is as hungry as the other. They are both superb fighters, and what it will come down to, on the night, is who makes the first mistake. Good luck to both gents. Hope its a cracker. (Calzaghe on points smiley).

Who gives a flying duck about America?

If Calzaghe can get the most dollar by fighting at the Millenium but at times suitable to a US TV audience then why should he go fight in America just for the sake of it?

It's laughable.

e-keyboard_warrior.........

Firstly, let me answer your first point, about Calzaghe staying at home and ducking fighters. When Frank Warren first verbally agreed the fight with Mogens Palle, the fight was originally scheduled to take place in DENMARK.

It was only after Warren pointed out, that they could fill the Millenium stadium with 50,000+ people, that the fight was rearranged to take place in Wales. This drew no objections from Kessler or Palle (funny the ways in which money talks).

Of course the excuse that Joe has home advantage is already being put on the backburner, by both yourself and Mike Marley. Should Kessler lose, I imagine that will be the first and most vocal objection. After the stunned silence of course......

Secondly can you tell me the last time Hopkins, Jones Jnr, Taylor, Pavlik, Toney, Johnson, Tarver, etc, etc, fought in front of 50,000+ people? I guess that will be never.

The fight between Winky Wright and Hopkins illustrates the state of boxing in the USA at the moment. It drew an audience of 9,000 in a half-empty arena. Thats how much American's cherish their fighters.

In case you haven't noticed, boxing is a GLOBAL sport, with excellent fighters all over the world. So if fights can be made with stadiums FULL, rather than half-empty and the same amount of PPV revenue can be generated then what's the problem?

Roy Jones Jnr spent his entire career fighting nobodies (Hopkins and Toney aside), he rarely fought outside of the US, yet no one ever questioned his ability. Yet because Calzaghe wont get on a plane, to fight in front of half-empty stadiums all of a sudden that downgrades his ability? Absolute rubbish.

Now back to the fight, as the hour draws near.........

I see no evidence Kessler is 'stronger or hungrier'. Both fighters want to win more than anything else. How you come to the conclusion, that Kessler is a 'much, much, better fighter', I dont know. What I DO know is that Calzaghe is quicker, is better technically, is the smarter fighter and has more fight experience. These are the attributes that decide fights.

Anyway, like I said if Kessler wins, I wont hesitate to praise him. My feeling is though that Joe will put on a performance of a lifetime and tomorrow morning, will have almost all the belts in the super middleweight divison - and you my friend - will be out of pocket.

re dissociation

Good piece I think the suggestion is that if you dont make it in the states, then ur a nobody Same I guess as for musicians

Why dont the yanks fight abroad? Because the money is supposedly better due to ppv, does it make them better? No. As for the fight, I have tgo admit I dont knopw much about Kessler except his record abnd that he's only really fought 2 'names'. Had a lot of fights fopr a european in a short space of time. My thoughts for the fight havent changed even thoiugh I speak not full aware of the lad's capabilities, but as long as JC is fit and age hasnt got to him, then a pouints win for him or perhaps a stoppage due to the no of unanswered punches JC will land. Dont see him knocking Kessler oput but I dont see how Kessler can win except for a lucky punch. 9 times out 10 JC wins this.
