Countdown To England - Sri Lanka 1st Test!

comment on the article

We are now just over a month away from the 1st Test of a 3 Match Series between England and Sri Lanka. With England there are always a lot of talking points and the build up to this Series will be no different. Peter Moores and co. have a lot of selection problems ahead of the Test Series, these are as follows:

Who Do We Pick As Wicketkeeper? Prior, Mustard, Davies, Read, Ambrose etc.

Who opens with Cook? Probs Vaughan, but still not totally sure

Hoggard or Anderson? or maybe even Sidebottom

Shah or Bopara, or both?

I think that this should be the XI for the 1st against Sri Lanka:

Alastair Cook
Michael Vaughan (c)
Ian Bell
Kevin Pietersen
Paul Collingwood
Owais Shah
Steven Davies
Sturat Broad
Ryan Sidebottom
James Anderson
Monty Panesar

I think that this will be the actuall XI:

Alastair Cook
Michael Vaughan (c)
Ian Bell
Kevin Pietersen
Paul Collingwood
Owais Shah
Phil Mustard
Sturat Broad
Ryan Sidebottom
Matthew Hoggard
Monty Panesar

this is the ideal team:

A Cook
M Vaughan
I Bell
K Pietersen
P Collingwood
R Bopara
P Mustard
M Hoggard
R Sidebottom
S Harmison
M Panesar

If you have Harmison and Hoggard available, it would be crazy not to play them. I think Geraint Jones should be behind the stumps again, he can surely get more runs than Prior. We'll see how Mustard deals with it. But if the full test squad was available, i would play: A Cook, M Trescothick, M Vaughan, I Bell, K Pietersen, A Flintoff, G Jones, M Hoggard, S Harmison, S Jones, M Panesar

Why do people keep selecting Harmison?!! He has done nothing for England in the last year, apart from bowl wide of course. Hes also been injured and I dont think two club games in SA is enough to warrant his place in the team.

1.)Cook
2.)Bell
3.)Vaughan
4.)KP
5.)Colly
6.)Prior
7.)Bopara (golden arm)/ shah - personally i think ravi cud make more of an impact with the ball because shah's offspin is almost as bad as mine
8.)Sidebottom
9.)Hoggard
10.)Harmison/anderson if he doesn't prove his fitness - harmison is still a wicket taking bowler even though he can go at about 5 an over
11.)Monty

In batting order

Cook
Vaughan (C)
Pietersen
Bell
Collingwood
Bopara
Prior
Swann
Broad
Hoggard
Panesar

Pietersen should bat three in all forms of the game and with this side the batting depth is lengthened. If the seamers fail then pick Anderson and then Harmison. two spinners must play!

i would not choose Panesar, no point taking player who cant field and bat, and he is not even in good form, my team will be:

1) A Cook
2) M Vaughan (c)
3) I Bell
4) K Pietersen
5) O Shah
6) P Collingwood
7) G Swann
8) S Broad
9) M Hoggard
10) R Sidebottom
11) J Anderson

T_Toon, I think your 'actual XI' is right on the money, with the exception that Prior will play instead of Mustard. The only other possibility is that Swann will play instead of Broad or Panesar, but I don't think either will happen.

Paul G - You appear to have dropped Matthew Hoggard, England's only world class bowler.

Shurely shome mishtake?
