Shoaib Akhtar named in 16-man ODI squad

Cricinfo staff

October 26, 2007

Shoaib Akhtar has been named in a 16-man squad that will take part in a five-match ODI series during Pakistan's tour of India.

Akhtar makes his way back into the team for the first time since being sent home ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 after being involved in a spat with Mohammad Asif. He was handed a 13-match ban and a hefty fine for the incident, but has already served the punishment, which ended with the fourth ODI against South Africa.

The team, led by Shoaib Malik, also includes Fawad Alam, who played his first and only ODI so far against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Mohammad Hafeez, who had been dropped mid-way through the on-going ODI series against South Africa, has been left out. Also missing on a place is Khalid Latif, who had been called up ahead of the third ODI against South Africa in place of Hafeez.

Pakistan ODI squad Shoaib Malik (capt), Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Kamran Akmal (wk), Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Imran Nazir, Fawad Alam, Abdur Rehman, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Rao Iftikhar Anjum.

I remember how well he bowled last time the English team toured Pakistan. He was on top form. (Now we may suspect why, but he was still damn good.)

I thought McGrath reaction to Shoaib's explanation was priceless

Shoiab said he needed a long run up as he was a jet plane

MCgrath asked 'What am I then? A helicopter?' LOL

Shoaib must be a bit rusty and under huge pressure

Good luck to him if he comes on top a well deserved come back

it is simple that Shoaib should be picked as he is one of Pakistan's only passionate players as he stick to his word (and his contract) unlike Yousuf and the only reason he got banned was because of an insult to his mother and most other people in the situation he was in would have done a similar thing i'm not saying what he did was right but at least he did what he did for good(ish) reasons but however he is a roll model to kids so maybe he could of avoided the situation.
This should not be put in his way and he should picked if he is good enough no matter about the politics as he is a cricketer and that what should get him picked for his job and not anything else.

Personally, I think Shoaib has passed his sell by date. Surely its time to get some new blood in like Sohail Tanvir, who given time can be the next Wasim Akram. And anyway with Gul and Asif as the spearhead of our attack maybe its time to loook forward?

Shoaib,Asif,Gul,Tanveer can be a lethal partnership in the indian series. It is good to see akhter back. He still has another 3 years. His task is to groom this young attack into a world class one.

For sure, Shoaib Akhtar is a great pace bowler par excellence from day one. His only problem has been his "Wild" attitude, unbecoming of a first class cricketer anywhere in the world. Having played first class cricket myself in Pakistan, I think that if the movers and shakers of PCB could handle Shoaib properly, he could be a great asset for Pakistani cricket for many more years to come. PCB itself is in shambles for quite some time now. The head of the PCB is an appointee of the military ruler, both of whom never played top quality cricket in a foreign country. The current chief selector "Salahuddin Sallu" barely played few test matches in his cricket days in the sixties, so how can he select the best team for Pakistan in the year 2007? Nevertheless, based on my first class cricket background and having played quality cricket in many countries of the world including Australia, New Zealand, England and Pakistan, I am pretty sure that if Shoaib Akhtar is treated professionally by PCB, his attitude problem could be checked to a greater extent. Thereafter, he could deliver what is expected of him by the cricket lovers all over the world i.e. to perform brilliantly and win matches for his team.

I think the captain and the Managers job is to keep the individual in check. Shoaib is a fantastic bowler, hope he keep his focus on cricket.
