US to host Premier League 'soccer'?

Premier League
comment on the article

How does Manchester United v Chelsea at the Yankee Stadium grab you as a Premier League fixture?

If some of the great and the good of American sport and English football are to be believed, Premier League matches could be switching to the USA in years to come.

"I can see that happening sooner rather than later - it would be good for the game," said West Ham non-executive chairman Eggert Magnusson.

This week, Wembley Stadium is hosting a competitive NFL clash between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants, and London has already staged NFL and NBA matches earlier this year.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

The games have all been very well-received, with the Dolphins and Giants apparently able to fill Wembley's 90,000 capacity two or three times over.

So the ball is already rolling in terms of taking sports outside of their traditional areas in order to break into new markets.

Welcome to globalisation on a sporting level.

A Premier League spokesman said that he can't see English football doing away with hundreds of years of history by switching the traditional home and away format of its showpiece competition.

But the age-old tradition of 3pm kick-offs on a Saturday was not exactly sacrosanct once TV companies started calling the financial tune.

The system of organising fixtures in the States operates differently, making it somewhat easier to pick a game up and plonk it down somewhere else.

But, as every fan of any sport in the modern era knows all too well, money talks. Very loudly. And the Premier League tends to be a good listener.

Just imagine if the Premier League could gain a foothold in the lucrative USA market. The money flooding in from merchandising and TV deals could make the next generation of elite footballers look back with pity at the paltry £100,000-a-week wages paid to the top stars at the moment.

With Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa all owned by US billionaires, there are plenty of dollars already swishing around the Premier League, and Robert Kraft, another US-based billionaire, has reiterated his desire to join the party.

Can you see this happening any time soon? Or is it too far-fetched to ever get off the ground?

And if it did happen, would it be to the Premier League's ultimate benefit? Would more money raise standards even higher? What about the season-ticket holder left watching their team's home match on TV back in England?

Do Americans even want Premier League 'soccer' in the land of NBA, NHL and NFL?

Let us know your thoughts.

so you are a bigger fan than somebody in China? Lets be real, all football clubs in UK have their home fields of course, but playing 2 games outside of the UK is seriously not that bad. How could liverpool ever become LiverpoolLosAngelas? It's about connecting with fan bases that normally would not have the chance to go watch them

Am I a bigger fan than someone in china, well a good percentage of my income goes on a season ticket, I travel up and down the country supporting my team, dedicate a lot of time and money towards the club – I support spurs because they were my local side – not because it ‘was a team I liked’ – so yeah I am a bigger fan than someone in china

Even if we take your bent logic that all fans are the same why should we take games to china? Or the US? Are they bigger than fans in Russia, Africa, Croatia, Canada, north korea, germany, greenalnd etc – and then why play in Tokyo, LA, Moscow etc are they bigger fans than someone in a smaller village/town?

So unless you play a game in every single city/town in the world you discriminating against some fans

The simple fact is that apart from taking money out of the country there is no logical reason to do this. The premiership would be less competitive because the 39th game could be grossly unfair, fans who literally pay thousands and dedicate a lot of time effort will be unable to attend the game, players will be more tired than usual for internationals – apart form money there is no real reason to do this.

If I want to go to Disneyland, see the lakers play, travel on the canals of Venice I’ll go to the country they’re in which boosts they’re tourism income and doesn’t affect the things I look at – I think it’s a typical American attitude to not leave they’re county and expect something they want to simply come to them

Yes Rober, we are bigger fans than those in China. There must be a Chinese League, so why don't people attend that? If I wanted to see Barcelona vs Real Madrid in would go to the Nou Camp, I wouldn't expect it to be played at Layer road for example. Think about it, only about three teams matter to the rest of the world from our league, so people will not go to watch Bolton (especially with Megson in charge) vs Fulham would they?

If people from China, America, Australia and Hong Kong want to see live Premier League football, they should come over here.

you know what I am a bigger fan then the yanks the chinese the asian and most of the clueless clowns who claim they support united, the idiot asians scream when they see beckham or ronaldo even though giggs scholes have done so much more, I bet they have never heard of duncan edwards the great jimmy murphy, why don't you lot go home and watch you're oval ball and leave our game alone because I dont want the premiership to be the best or the richest I want a sane premiership that is exiting and strong and who is not drunk with power, I will post this once again to show what could be instore for the premiership and where scumdamore and bamwick could be like when they are out of jobs, I am spreading the message be warned they might steal you're change

Absolutely right rooney, many Chinese people and Americans have no knowledge of the history of English football, or the tradition. I can guarantee they have only heard of about 5 English teams, and only care about the success, or a big brand player. Giggs or Scholes, as you correctly say, have done more for Man Utd than Beckham and Ronaldo.

Think about this logically. Say Wigan vs Bolton are playing in Miami, with Man Utd vs Tottenham in Beijing straight after. The Miami people will stay in and watch the Man Utd match instead. There is no logic to it.

thankyou finally someone has commensence I am sick and tired of the game and have been for years, I sometimes think to myself why did I support this club they do not deserve my support, especially since the glazers come in who are a disgrace has human beings who are the most self centred famly I have ever seen, before I get onto my main point did anyone take into acount what happens if a club is going for 3 trophies like 99 that match could completely blow a sides season into chaos, the only way it could be done is if you could clone the players and that is has crazy has this idea.

but I hear people say more money for better players for starters I thought the premiership was quiet fine in the 90's not the best league but we had tactically inept managers who played exiting football not park the bus sides, if someone said would you rather kaka and ronaldo or scholes and giggs in their prime I would take scholes and giggs in their prime every day of the week, and I would rather have most of the squad in the way sir matt busby built his sides are home grown loyal steady quiet and down to earth players, I think ronaldo is great but he along with anderson nani van nistlerooy when he was hear do not quiet embrass and understand what it means to wear the united shirt.

we have ronaldo saying he would love to play in spain first of all he is at united enjoy the expierience it is more relaxing and have more freedom then the circus that swollows barca and madrid if you have 1 bad game and he is crap, ronaldinho is destroyed he is having a bad patch and the spanish media want to kick him out have ronaldo in spain so when he is not doing well kick him out, tevez evra vidic solkjaer along with the british players like rooney feel the pride and mirror past united players who played years at united, I would rather fantastic underated united player's then players like ronaldo great but always hint off playing somewhere else when that club thought an overated ageing player in beckham and an 33 year old figo, and on the asians the yanks the chinese when they think beckham is so great and forget to mention players like scholes and giggs you know they are clueless.

Two things i want to say.
Firstly. If people in the USA want to watch our league, they can do what we do. they can watch it on Fox. Fox put on alot of footie, at least 6 to 7 games a week,or they can fly over. Its a lot cheaper for them to fly over then us brits living in Mexico but we are not asking any of our teams to play here.
Secondly. It looks like it could be the last game of the season. Just say that Arsenal has already won the league and they are in one other final, FA Cup or CL,would they send their first team to play in the USA. I think not. So what would be the point.
