What our politicians think of rugby?!

comment on the article

There are constant calls up and down the country for our respective unions to get our MP's, MSPs, MoA's(?) and councillors involved in promoting rugby both in financial terms and also in helping get the foot in the door with schools.

What chance have we got when our elected officials display entrenched one-eyed opinions like those of Councillor Terry Kelly?

Terry is a Labour councillor on Renfrewshire Council (Paisley and outlying areas - West of Scotland) who runs a blog where he holds forth on anything and everything that catches his interest.

The two links below are for blog entries where he expresses his views on rugby union and those who take part in the sport either as competitors or spectators. His responses to comments made are even more revealing.

Now, ask yourself - and more importantly your locally elected respresentatives - if this is the view held by our elected officials, what chance does rugby really have?

Is the domination of rugby by the middle classes not go more to do with the lack of grounds that inner city schools have? Most of these schools have no actual grass playing fields. Hence it is a lot easier to convert a concrete bloke into a football field, and have a kick about with a ball.

I know I would not like to be tackled on a concrete playing surface!

And why should schools spend their government money on having to hire buses to take children to play a game in a park, when they are struggling to keep classes such as art, and PE as it is?

The man's a bigoted clown. I notice that he says any sport he considers to be played by priviledged people doesn't require skill. eg Hockey, Polo. Now I agree that Polo is played by well heeled toffs but I can also see that it requires a fair amount of skill.

This guy is priceless. He manages to maintain an air of superiority in his replies to people, as well. I particularly like his assertion that it's easier for a footballer to pick up rugby than for a rugby player to pick up football. He can also "probably still play rugby" himself.

Absolutely right, awesomemccaw, that point was made by one of the people on his blog but, unfortunately, it was ignored.

This guy is utterly utterly scary and needs to be gotten rid of. His views are truely so ignorant, I've had more intelligent conversations with a door mat. His website is nothing more than a self-promotional load of garbage. Guys, we shouldnt even give this guy the grace of talking about him, he should be shut down

Mutt: your fault.

I blame you for posting the link.

The feedback comments are just like a road accident ... so terrible but I find myself incapable of not looking.

He just digs and digs and digs ... wonder if someone in the office next door will tell him to "Stop digging" soon ?
