How Negative can one team be?

Scottish Premier Celtic

After watching the last two celtic defeats against rangers and benfica, I cant remember the last time we had such negative formations going into two games where we were playing relatively equal teams.

Tonight against a very mediocre Benfica we played about as negatively as any team could play. Their defence was there for the taking yet Strachen made not attempt whatsoever to change things to put a little pressure on them. The way the game was going it was almost inevitable they were going to score yet we did nothing to prevent this. Against rangers it was even worse. Even by the time we were 2 0 down we were happy making no effort to play positive football. Its pathethic tactics for a team like Celtic to employ against pretty average opposition.

I, like many others, have never warmed to Strachen at all, but over the last week my resolve has only been strengthened. We have become one of the most negative teams around, clinging on to draws and narrow defeats against poor teams. Week in week out we do this away from home. We effectively give a goal start and 60 minutes to whoever we are playing before we loosen up and try to play football.

I believe Strachen is not the right man for the job. Regardless of his previous success, which I would argue had more to do with the state of Rangers than anything else, it would be hard for anyone to argue that a team like Celtic couldnt attract a better manager if he was to go. Even if we lose, we should at least lose making attempts to play decent football. Against rangers at the weekend and benfica tonight, we had given up the games before a ball had been kicked

I'm not a big fan of Gordon Strachan. He does get it right a lot but sometimes like this week, he got it totally wrong. Sno is just not up to it, same as Caldwell. Playing Darren O'Dea out of position on Sunday was a huge mistake. And what about Derek Riordan? The guy could have won player of the season last season with only a handful of starts. I just think Strachan has a personal problem with him, even when Naka and McGeady are playing badly he brings back Jasorik, who i have to say is playing well, but time and time again, Riordan is left on the Bench, what was the point in buying him?

Strachan sold Miller, when he really should have sold Venegoor, who is so disapointing in big games, he's being a virtual spectator in the old firms he's played in, and hasn't scored in Europe since the Man U game at Old Trafford, sure, he'll get you a lot of goals against the likes of Falkirk, and Dundee Utd, but then again, so did Henri Camara, and we all know how sensational he is

Strachan doesn't learn and that is his main problem it was obvious what he was going to do from the start and he never has the vision to chage things when they are not working. When was the last time you seen Man U going anywhere in Europe and playing 1 up front and sitting back they go for the win in every game. Celtic are an attacking club and therefore should play to there strengths rather than taking off donati and bringing on Sno to be negative. I agree to try to contain them for 60minutes or so but the game was there to be won last night they couldn't deal with McGeady, but not enough support. GS should have brought McDonald and Naka on with 25mins left and thrown everything at them, we might have got hit on the break and lost but we lost anyway. FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE.

Now i understand what you all mean by TGR. You are talking about the gap between winning an away CL game and losing an away CL game. And from what i can tell the gap is only gonna get bigger. Its the other Gap id be worried about though, the one between your ears.

Honestly - STRACHAN MUST GO!!!

I know this may sound like a knee jerk comment but think about it - how poor have all the other teams in the SPL been over the last 2 years?. We are currently in the midst of the worst defensive away record in the clubs history, and we have been bullied by semi decent Rangers and benfica! I cant take any more! Donati off, Sno On??? What was he thinking!

No Gusto, any more of this and Scott Brown will be packing his bags at the next opportunity. Im really worried about this Celtic team under Strachan - Gordon, your teas oot!!

Could not agree more, the guy is a joke and like you say he should be somewhere else helping them instead of a major club Like Celtic where he is so far out of his depth.

The only good point at the moment is that the rest of the SPL are bad and it papers over the cracks for the moment but as soon as the Hibs Hearts and dare I say it Gers get better we will be in trouble.

100% behind you tomobrien

Big Jan is proving to be quite injury prone and maybe we should be looking for a new target man

But i do think sno is a talent in the making (whether WGS is the man to develop that talent ???)

im a massive Riordan fan, even before he signed, did strachan himself say last season that riordan was the best natural finisher at the club, probably one of the best he has ever coached

well, why is he continously left on the bench and yet he picks guys like jarosik ahead of him

riordan has the talent and is a lifelong tic fan so would appreciate what it is to play for the club and give 110% when he is on the park...unlike some of the players now who are unfit (quite literally) to wear the jersey

as a fan i have never rated WGS since he was appointed manager or even before it for that matter...c'mon appointing some no hoper who was more used to fighting relegation battles than anything else

it is about time WGS got the boot, his tactics are awefull and his signing's even worse

bout time we got ourself's a manager who can get our team where it should be

i long for the 3-5-2 day's of o'niell and a team to match

WGS has come in and broken up the best team we have had in recent years and alienated the ones he cant get rid of

Strachan would also get another good job in football if he left probably somewhere in England. He can leave having won the league twice and cup and getting us to the last 16 in the champions league so his CV would be quite good to any potential employer, so he should leave now for his best interests aswell as ours. If he stays he I am not confident that we will even get in the Uefa cup and Smith and McCoist clearly have the beating of him in the old firm games, we can't even get a goal!!!! If this continues I fear out of europe and struggling to get back in next year and the league championship going to the other side of Glasgow. The media keep saying what more do Celtic fans want after winning the league two years running and we should back him. I will back him in wishing him all the best in the future but surely his future can not be at this club he can't take us any further and that is where we want to go onwards to compete in europe not to struggle every year with trying to get out of the group. We are not going to win the champions league this year but it would be nice to think that we could win it sometime in the not so distant future but the building and progression needs to start now not going backwards, we have waited a long time to get out of a champions league group and now it is back to the possibility of not even the Uefa cup. Anything less than qualification to the last 16 and to be ahead of Rangers simply won't do and if so the only thing Mr Strachan should be getting for Christmas is his P45!!!!!

I think WGS is a good manager but I confess that I find some of his decisions rather strange when it comes to team selections.I too would give Riordan a chance of a run in the team though I think that it's our defence that is the source of our problems.
They are just too cumbersome and slow for Europe because they are not tested enough at domestic level. In saying that it must be remembered that this was an away match and we did make a few chances which we failed to convert but if the highlights were a true reflection of the game we have played a lot worse and won.
So let's just see how the rest of the group games go and keep on supporting the team as we always do.We have two home games left and with our record as it is there, all hope is not lost.
