Wembley in line for European final

comment on the article

Wembley Stadium has been shortlisted to host the Champions League final in 2010 or 2011, it has been revealed.

The rebuilt stadium will be considered by a delegation from Europe's governing body Uefa, who will visit this year.

Berlin's Olympiastadion and the Allianz Arena in Munich and, in Spain, Madrid's Bernabeu and the Mestalla in Valencia are the other stadiums in contention.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and Dublin's rebuilt Lansdowne Road are in contention for the Uefa Cup event.

Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Espanyol's Estadi Montjuic in Barcelona, the Arena Hamburg and the National Stadium in Bucharest are the other stadia being considered.

Let us know your thoughts.

Given its £800m price tag, it would be pretty embarrassing if it weren't to host a major final as soon as possible.

It is probably the best stadium in Europe, so let's just hope the FA/footbal clubs/football fans manage to avoid any organisational/behavioural bloopers before the decision is made.

im not being biased here but i have been to wembley and i have been to the Emirates and i know the capacity of wembley is superior, but everything else about it does not stand up to the emirates. The emirates has excellent facilities and match day hospitality, the seats are much better, there is not a bad view in the stadium. When i went to Wembley i honestly was very disappointed the pitch cut up very easily and the view wasnt amazing. I'm surprised that the emirates wasn't mentioned for the Champions League Final but given its 60,000 capacity UEFA probably wanted more.

Please God, not Wembley. It represents everything that's wrong in football. The final should go to a proper football stadium and all of the other stadia in contention for the finals would be more worthy.

IraqiGooner, the problem with the Emirates is that it's not a 5 star stadium, so it can't host the Champions League final.

What the Emirates for the UEFA Cup? That is unfair. Doesn't the Emirates have good "capacity, infrastructure, facilities and functionality"? The Emirtaes should host a Champions League Final and a World Cup Semi Final if England were to be given it in 2018.

After Panorama's programme last night, exposing FIFA as corrupt and prejudiced, I doubt that any ground in England will ever host a major tournament until FIFA's entire governers are dismissed, including Seb Coe who refused to answer questions and is (alledgedly) well aware of the corrupt payment system. England (and allegations against Scotland) will never see the world cup or Euro finals until this dismissal.

Is the Emirates really a much better stadium (disregarding capacity) and am I right in saying it was around a quarter of the price of Wembley?

No more than Wembley deserves,it's a fantastic stadium, but it helps if you can walk there!
Hope we push to stage the World cup now, with the likes of the Arsenal, Man u, Sunderland, Newcastle etc we have the grounds and we would qualify, which would be good!

Emirates more that deserves to host the UEFA Cup Final, but it has all the qualities and more to host both a Champions League Final and a World Cup Semi Final.
